One of the biggest immigration myths I hear is: If I qualified, I would already know it.

I wouldn't be so sure. Many people come into my office convinced they have no options. Sometimes they're right. But often, they base that conclusion on something they read online, heard from a friend, or were told years ago.

The challenge is that immigration law doesn't stand still. Eligibility changes.
Policies change.
Circumstances change.

What wasn't possible for someone five years ago may be possible today.

That's why I generally tell people not to rule themselves out before they've actually explored their options.

The answer may still be no.
But it's worth making sure.

Form: "Please enter your full legal name."

Applicant: "Done."

Thinking about U.S. citizenship? Don't rush the N-400.

Many people assume that once they've had their green card for a few years, they're automatically ready to apply for citizenship.

Sometimes that's true. Sometimes it's not.

Before filing Form N-400, USCIS looks at more than just how long you've been a permanent resident. Things like extended travel outside the U.S., tax filings, and certain legal issues can all affect your application.

I've had conversations with people who were excited to apply, only to learn that waiting a little longer or addressing an issue first could save them a lot of stress.

Not every love story follows the same immigration path.

For some couples, a fiancé visa may make sense. For others, marriage abroad followed by consular processing may be the better option. In some cases, applying inside the U.S. may be possible, but not always wise.

The problem is this: people often assume there’s one “standard” process. There isn’t.

The better question is not: What form do I file?
