On June 19, 1865, enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally received word of their emancipation — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. That moment represents not just the end of bo***ge, but the beginning of a long and ongoing pursuit of justice, equality, and dignity for all.
