This bill could change a lot of lives!

It's been more than six months since recreational ma*****na became legal in Michigan, and a new bill introduced in the Michigan legislature looks to expunge criminal records of people convicted of possession or use of ma*****na offenses.

Studies across the country have shown that indigent defendants are more likely to be convicted of felony offenses than those with retained counsel.

I have had the honor and privilege to represent indigent defendants. Unfortunately, I too have seen indigent defendants treated much differently than those who can afford to hire counsel. It’s not comparing apples to oranges - it’s comparing wealth to poverty. And it’s not equality when people are treated differently because on financial status.

I will continue to fight for justice and equality in our justice system. Judge Learned Hand said it perfectly: Thou shalt not ration justice.

Today we celebrate our independence, our nation, and our rights. The US Constitution and the Bill of Rights guarantee protections in criminal prosecution, which the US Supreme Court has expanded in cases like Arizona v Miranda.
