This Memorial Day, our office will be closed as we pause to remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

In small towns across Iowa, Memorial Day means more than a long weekend… it’s flags lining Main Street, local ceremonies, quiet cemeteries, family gatherings, and moments of gratitude for those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Today, Iowa River Legal is out of the county handling court-appointed matters and serving clients in surrounding Iowa communities.

Because of that, our office availability and response times may be a little more limited throughout the day. We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding while we are in court and on the road.

We will be back in the office tomorrow and returning calls, emails, and scheduling requests as soon as possible.

As National Police Week comes to a close, I’ve spent some time reflecting on the people who continue to serve communities across Iowa… often under difficult circumstances and with little recognition.

Before opening Iowa River Legal, I spent years working as a prosecutor alongside law enforcement officers throughout central Iowa. I saw firsthand the long hours, missed family time, difficult calls, and pressure that come with wearing the badge in small communities where everyone knows your name.

In rural Iowa especially, law enforcement officers are often more than just responders. They are coaches, neighbors, mentors, volunteers, and familiar faces in the community.

Regardless of where people stand politically or philosophically on the criminal justice system, I think most can agree that communities function best when there are good people willing to step forward and serve with integrity, professionalism, and compassion.

This week is a reminder to recognize those individuals including: dispatchers, deputies, officers, troopers, jail staff, and first responders. The people who continue showing up every day for our communities.

Friday Focus: Summer in Small-Town Iowa

Summer is almost here in Iowa.

School hallways are emptying out, baseball diamonds are filling up, county fairs are around the corner, and families are shifting into a new rhythm for the season.

For many people, summer is also when life changes happen:

* Young adults heading into new jobs or college
* Families thinking about wills or powers of attorney
* Home projects and small businesses ramping up
* Farmers and contractors entering their busiest months

At Iowa River Legal, one of the things I’ve appreciated most about opening this firm is getting to walk alongside people through those real-life transitions — not from a high-rise office, but right here in the communities we call home.

Today was one of those small moments that carries a lot of meaning for Iowa River Legal.

We recently purchased a commemorative brick through the Hardin County Courthouse project, and soon “Iowa River Legal – Est. 2025” will become a permanent part of the official courthouse walkway near the Alden square.

For a rural law firm built on community, relationships, and service, that means more than just having our name engraved in brick. It represents planting roots here and believing in small towns, local businesses, and accessible legal representation close to home.

This brick may be small, but to us it symbolizes something much bigger:
