10 years is CRAZY! I started this thing with zero business background…other than my diploma from the business-finance magnet program at IPS Northwest High School🤪. I had a prosecutor’s salary, very little savings, and a huge wedding on the horizon. The super crazy thing is, I didn’t even consider ANY of that. I had confidence that I could offer quality legal representation. I knew how to be a criminal lawyer and I knew I’d care about doing a good job for the people who trusted me enough to hire me. With that, I was confident I’d get a “few” clients and make “enough” money and I’d just figure out the rest. This journey has far exceeded my expectations. Over the course of 10 years…a few clients have been nearly 500. “Enough” money has provided salaries for me and several employees and interns, allowed me to achieve my goal of paying off my law school loan debt and afforded me the opportunity to truly boss up by purchasing the building that my team and I work in every day. In these 10 years, I’ve had the privilege of being a significant part of journeys that have shaped lives. Sometimes these have been the journeys of clients at their worst moments who later invite me to their wedding, baby shower, book signing, or graduation. A journey where my advocacy made all the difference in their future. Sometimes these journeys don’t have a happy ending, but at least my clients always know that someone is fighting hard for them the whole way. Other times these were journeys of mentees that culminate in law school admission with hopes of taking over this firm one day. I’ve watched my employees leave and go on to pursue better opportunities that only working at the black girl magic factory could’ve prepared them for. I’ve won many cases and I’ve lost a few too but it’s not the wins or losses that define me. It’s ALL the lives I’ve been blessed to be a significant part of just because I had the courage to do this thing…and how those lives have shaped my own. That’s what I’m most grateful for. Cheers to 10 years!
