HEC Environmental Advocates

HEC Environmental Advocates HEC's Environmental Advocates are volunteers that help spread important legislative & advocacy information to people across Indiana.

Environmental Advocates (EAs) help spread important information to Hoosiers across the state. They help inform citizens about environmental legislation in the Statehouse; they spread their knowledge and passion through tabling events and attending meetings; they perform outreach via phone and social media; and more! Your time commitment as an EA is entirely up to you – we are simply looking for pa

ssionate and inspired supporters to help us in our outreach work. If you have the motivation and are willing to commit any amount of time to helping us advocate for a cleaner, greener environment then please join us! Trainings are scheduled monthly. EAs who complete two training workshops and volunteer at least 10 hours a semester will receive a certificate and a letter of reference.

PLEASE TAKE ACTION BY CALLING YOUR REP TONIGHT!

**URGENT Call-to-Action** The Indiana House just significantly worsened the House Committee version of SB 389 with a just-adopted floor amendment: the latest version of the bill will strip all Class I wetlands - and many Class II wetlands - of any state protections. The bill is now in its final form and the House will vote whether to pass it tomorrow (4/13/21). More than 80 groups around the state oppose loss of wetland protection. Join them - EMAIL OR CALL YOUR STATE REP (bitly.com/INLegis) tonight and ask them to vote NO on SB 389! https://bitly.com/indianawetlands

URGENT CALL TO ACTION! We have a lot of calls to make over the next few days to try and stop House Bill 1191, which would strip away the right of local governments to prohibit energy resources and infrastructure (tied to a local electric or gas utility) that a local government might view as harmful to the public health. Send an email to [email protected] if you're able to help make calls to HEC supporters in key districts.

You can learn more about this dangerous bill at https://www.hecweb.org/issues/environmental-health-justice/toxic-exposure-reduction/hb-1191-bars-local-govt-from-prohibiting-unhealthy-energy-resources/.

The heart of HB 1191 is that it will forbid cities and counties from banning utility-owned energy resources that the local government might view as a public health risk. We urge our supporters and partners to contact your […]

It is so encouraging to see advocacy in action! Thank you to everyone who reached out to their lawmakers. :)
If you reached out to your lawmaker about this bill, let us know how it went! Leave a comment with your experience.

Today the Senate Judiciary Committee heard HB 1436, a bill that in its original form would have required state agencies to pay the attorney fees of parties that successfully appeal agency decisions, including IDEM and DNR permitting and enforcement decisions. The measure was amended to narrow its focus to requiring state agencies to pay attorney fees of an appealing party ONLY WHEN an agency is found to have acted frivolously or in bad faith. While HEC still opposes the bill because it is unnecessary and could still lead to harmful decisions, we are incredibly grateful for this improvement and are so thankful to the grassroots and grasstops engagement that led to this improvement! THANK YOU to everyone who reached out to their Senators and made this happen!
