As we spend time with family and friends this holiday weekend, we also reflect on the importance of service, dedication and supporting one another. We extend our deepest gratitude to all who have served and to the families who carry their legacies forward.

Hall Render is proud to have served as purchaser’s counsel to Centurion Foundation in its recent acquisition of two Rhode Island safety net hospitals—Roger Williams Medical Center and Our Lady of Fatima Hospital.

This milestone transaction:
✔ Converted two hospitals from for-profit to nonprofit, IRS-recognized tax-exempt status
✔ Protected hundreds of jobs
✔ Helped avoid state receivership and ensured continuity of care
✔ Positioned both facilities for long-term stability and growth

Led by Shareholder and Board Member Charles Sukurs and Shareholder Kelci Laster, our attorneys advised on this matter since 2021, guiding a complex, multi-year process involving distressed health care assets, regulatory considerations and intricate transaction structuring. We are honored to support mission-driven organizations in preserving access to essential health care services for the communities they serve.

🏛️ Leadership Spotlight: Lisa Lucido

For Lisa Lucido, Shareholder and Detroit Co-Office Managing Partner, leadership at Hall Render is rooted in presence and commitment. “To me, leadership is about showing up, for our clients, for our colleagues and for the culture that makes Hall Render special. I strive to be accessible, thoughtful and transparent, and to invest in people and relationships.”

One of the accomplishments Lisa is most proud of came during a challenging period following the sudden passing of her mentor and the Detroit Office’s former Managing Partner, Art deVaux. Working closely with fellow Co-Office Managing Partner Mark Adams and Firm leadership, Lisa helped stabilize the Michigan office, support clients and guide the team through transition—positioning the office for continued growth and expanded presence in the market. She strives to honor Art’s legacy through her leadership each day.

Lisa’s community involvement is also deeply personal. As a breast cancer survivor, she serves as a peer support mentor with Sharsheret, offering encouragement and guidance to individuals and families navigating breast and ovarian cancer.

🏛️ Leadership Spotlight: John Williams

As Co-Office Managing Partner of the Firm’s Washington, D.C. office and Service Line Organizer for the Federal Advocacy practice, John Williams has helped shape the Firm’s presence at the center of federal health policy.

“I’m particularly proud of the decision to step away from an active litigation practice in 2012 to start our federal advocacy service line and open the Firm’s Washington, D.C. office,” John shares. “Having a meaningful presence in Washington, D.C., where so many health care policy decisions are made, was an important part of fulfilling the Firm’s national vision.” Building the practice required taking risk, cultivating new client relationships and establishing Hall Render’s brand with lawmakers, staff and regulators. Today, it serves hospital systems and health care organizations at the highest levels of federal policymaking.

Outside the Firm, John remains deeply engaged in public policy and community development. He serves on the board of the Woodson Center, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing policies and programs that help individuals in low-income communities build economic and social self-sufficiency. Through that role, he collaborates with former members of Congress and other national leaders on initiatives designed to empower families and strengthen neighborhoods.
