Can we PLEASE stop acting like substance use disorder is a moral failing???? Across the board, people agree that Jim Irsay was a good guy who cared about his family, his players, and his community. So why are people saying “let him rest in peace and his let his family mourn” like the way he died somehow diminishes his legacy?! If he died from a heart attack, or complications from diabetes no one would say that.

Substance Use Disorder is a disease. It’s not a moral failing.

Nurses: if you are scheduled for a personal appearance to renew your license DO NOT APPEAR WITHOUT A LAWYER. I do not say this because I am a lawyer. I say this because the Advisory Counsel will basically cross examine you, and ask you about issues that could directly affect your criminal rights. Any statements that you make in your personal appearance can you be used in your criminal case, or in a future criminal case.
It can be intimidating to speak up against an attorney who is cross examining you. But -- you have a constitutional right against self incrimination. An attorney will protect that right. PLEASE. HIRE A LAWYER BEFORE YOUR PERSONAL APPEARANCE.

Nurse after nurse after nurse tells me the same story. It’s not just ER nurses who are struggling. It’s every floor; every unit. 6 critical care patients to 1 nurse. Not enough care techs. It’s the same story over and over again. Nurses are accused of diversion, when really they are struggling to keep up and choose patient care over paperwork. Nurses seeing preventable deaths descend into depression and substance use.

Something needs to change.

"I refuse to watch my patients die because of absolute chaos that could otherwise be avoided, while, sadly, we are told to keep quiet as the ship we’re on sinks."

When representing a professional enduring substance use disorder, I am sometimes shocked at the depth of the trauma they suffered as a child or young adult. In my experience, SUD is very often a manifestation of past trauma or another mental health condition.

If that voice in the back of your head is saying, “I need help”, get it. Reach out now before your profession, your liberty, and your relationships are in jeopardy. .

It’s Renewal Season for Indiana RNs!

Remember: Professionals must answer the renewal questions accurately.
