We recently settled a case for the parents of a 5-year-old girl who was injured in a car accident. Thankfully, the little girl fully recovered from her traumatic injuries, and her case was settled at the mediation conference.

We recently settled a case for the parents of a 5-year-old girl who was injured in a car accident. Thankfully, the little girl fully recovered from her traumatic injuries, and her case was settled at the mediation conference.

After medical expenses and attorney fees, the settlement amount to our client was $128,000.00.

Because this case involves a settlement to a minor, the law requires that the settlement funds ($128,000.00) be preserved for our young client until she is 18.

In this instance, we went through the legal process to not only make sure the settlement funds will be preserved but also will grow within a conservative, airtight investment.

In this case, the $128,000 settlement will grow to over $320,000 by the time the young girl reaches age 18.

While the medical recovery for the little girl was always the priority, the legal recovery was also important.

Protecting Teen Drivers—A Parent's Priority

Every time I speak at high schools about safe driving, I can count on the students paying close attention.

They all know the heartbreak of losing a peer to a horrific car accident.

We talk about the risks—the cell phone, aggressive and reckless drivers. But most importantly, we talk about how to stay safe in an unpredictable environment.

The key? Always drive

That’s A🔸B🔸C🔸D—simple, but life-saving.

Near the end of my talk, I hand out keychains with my message. My hope is that it will encourage them to develop safe driving habits that protect themselves, their passengers, and others on the road.

Protecting Young Children in Car Accidents

As crash lawyers, a fair number of our cases involve children who are injured in car accidents. Because of their makeup, younger children are particularly vulnerable to head and neck injuries, even when they are buckled snug in a car seat.

In working with pediatric safety experts, we now know that rear-facing child seats are 5 times safer than front-facing car seats.

This car seat safety tip is important to know because violent collisions are on the rise. This is due to the staggering increase in the number of distracted and aggressive drivers on the roadway.

While a rear-facing car seat is highly recommended, the best way we can protect child passengers is to be on high alert for dangerous drivers, always taking a defensive approach to driving.

Locked on Driver Safety. Wrong Way Crashes.

I handle these cases. They are some of the most
devastating and senseless cases you can imagine.
There was one particular case that is etched in my
mind. It happened 4 years ago.

A family was returning home from a Christmas Day
celebration when they were hit head-on by a drunk
driver who was driving the wrong way on the
highway. It happened just several exits from the
family’s home. They almost made it home safe on
Christmas.

The driver, who was both a husband and father, was
killed instantly. His wife and small children
survived. The drunk driver was also killed. It was an
unimaginable tragedy.

During the legal investigation I discovered that the
drunk driver had been at a drinking at a tavern.

Accounts have it that he had been drinking for
several hours straight and was well intoxicated.

There were plenty of “red flags” at the tavern as he
sat at the bar alone. He came alone. He left alone.
I think about this case often, especially around this
time of year. I mostly think about how different life
would be for his wife and children had someone
acted on the “red flags”.

How someone might have called him an Uber or
some kind person would have given him a ride
home.

It would have been heroic.

I recently introduced the board game “Chutes and Ladders” to my
granddaughter, Lily.

As I watched Lily roll the dice and begin to grasp the game, it came
upon me that “Chutes and Ladders” is such a vivid metaphor for life.

While we all face our share of adversity, more often than not there is someone who shows up with a ladder. Family, friends, co-workers, maybe even a stranger—someone there to elevate us.

So today it was good for me to pause and think about how this has
played out in my life, especially at my law office.

We represent people who have figuratively slid down one of life's chutes. But not a minute goes by at Horn Law when I don’t see another ladder being lifted to help our clients as they recover from injury.

Through so many years, it has been my privilege to work with people who have made it their life’s work to build ladders and help others with a brighter future.
