USCIS is pausing a lot of citizenship cases post-interview and post-approval. If you're in this situation you're not alone. It's suspected that they are doing this in order to impact the mid-term election, and the hope is that the cases will resume and swearing-in-ceremonies will be scheduled once the election is over.

Here's another recent change to the green card process in Idaho: USCIS is looking for evidence that the immigrant won't be a public charge. They're looking at things like like education levels, job skills, employment history, age, health insurance, and disabilities. So now part of the process of getting a green card--including green cards through a spouse, adult child, or other family members--involves collecting evidence of all these things so that you can make a case that you won't need government help in the future.

Expect questions about these things at the green card interview.

Recent changes to the green card process:
There have been several recent changes to the adjustment of status green card process. One of these is a focus by USCIS on applicants remaining in valid legal status until the time they receive the green card.
In the past, green card applicants who were being petitioned by immediate relatives (such as a spouse or an adult child) didn't need to worry about being a visa overstay or about staying in status, and most other green card applicants didn't need to worry about staying in status once the I-485 application was filed.
Now, USCIS is examining these cases much more closely. Most people who were out of status are still being granted green cards, but often after longer delays. And there are reports of a handful of green card denials in these situations.
Most individuals should still file for permanent residency when possible, but they should be aware that overstays and falling out of status will likely delay their case. If possible, they should generally remain in valid legal status while their green card case processes.

USCIS has started to focus more on timely payment of taxes during the naturalization process. Late payment of taxes, or even filing for a tax extension, within the prior 5 years may cause issues.

If you're applying to become a U.S. citizen, here's what you should watch out for within the past 5 years (3 years if applying as a spouse of a U.S. citizen):
1. Are you behind on filing or paying your federal taxes? This has been something USCIS has looked at for years, but now people are running into problems with USCIS even if they have a payment plan in place with the IRS.
2. Have you paid on time each year? USCIS is even raising a stink about people who ask the IRS for filing extensions.

These are new developments. USCIS is submitting requests for evidence for tax history, and there's a chance any applications with any of the above issues will be rejected. We recommend you review your tax history and speak to an immigration attorney if any of the above applies to you before you file the N-400 for citizenship.
