“It’s only a misdemeanor.”
That does not mean it should be taken lightly.
A misdemeanor conviction in Alabama can bring jail time, fines, probation, court costs, and a criminal record that may show up when you apply for a job, professional license, apartment, or security clearance.
You have the right to represent yourself, but you will still be expected to follow the same court rules and deadlines as an attorney. The prosecutor will not advise you about defenses or explain whether accepting a plea is actually in your best interest.
A criminal defense attorney can examine how the evidence was obtained, identify problems with witness statements or police procedures, negotiate with the prosecutor, and determine whether you may qualify for a diversion program. In Madison County, some first-time, nonviolent offenders may be considered for pretrial intervention, but acceptance is not automatic.
The earlier your case is reviewed, the more options you may have.
