There’s actually a pretty interesting theory about why Michael Scott hates Toby Flenderson so much on The Office.

A lot of fans think it goes deeper than just Michael finding Toby annoying.

Toby represents something Michael is genuinely afraid of becoming.

A divorced guy sitting alone in HR with a quiet, depressing personal life.

And when you think about Michael’s obsession with relationships, marriage, and having the “perfect family,” it actually makes a lot of sense.

The show hints multiple times that Michael was deeply affected by his parents’ divorce growing up, even if he rarely talks about it directly.

So instead of dealing with that fear emotionally… he projects all of it onto Toby.

Which honestly makes their dynamic even funnier and a little sadder at the same time.

What’s even crazier is that apparently part of the hatred started almost by accident during filming.

According to stories from the set, Paul Lieberstein was taking forever to sign a card during a scene, and Steve Carell started getting genuinely irritated waiting for him.

And somehow that real annoyance translated perfectly onscreen.

From there, the Michael vs. Toby dynamic just kept growing into one of the best running jokes in the entire series.
