As we reach the midpoint of the year, it is a good time to pause and ask: Does your estate plan still reflect your current wishes and circumstances?

Here are a few important questions to consider:

🔹 Have you experienced a major life change? Marriage, divorce, remarriage, the birth or adoption of a child or grandchild, a death in the family, purchasing a new home, starting a new business, or retirement can all impact how your plan operates.

🔹 Do your decision-makers not align with your wishes anymore? Your executor, trustee, and powers of attorney should be individuals who are still willing and able to serve when needed.

🔹 Could your assets and beneficiary designations use a quick review? Retirement accounts, life insurance policies, and property titles should align with your will or trust to avoid unintended outcomes.

🔹 Has it simply been a while since you checked in on your plan? Even without major life changes, estate plans should still be reviewed periodically to remain current with evolving laws and aligned with your long-term goals.

Who can legally show up and get your kids right now — from camp, a sitter, a friend's house — if you suddenly couldn't?

Not "who would raise them in ten years." Right now.

Most parents have thought about the long-term guardian question, often during a quiet drive or a conversation with a spouse that never quite made it onto paper. Almost none have thought about the first 72 hours: who has legal authority to authorize emergency medical care or step in before any court is even involved.

Here's the truth I share with every family I sit down with: a verbal agreement, a godparent title, or a plan that only lives in your head doesn't exist in the eyes of the law. Without a properly executed legal document, that decision belongs to a judge who has never met you or your children.

A complete plan answers two questions, not one: who raises your children for the long haul, and who's authorized to step in immediately. Without both, there's a gap — and gaps are where already hard situations get much harder.
