This just in: Alimony will no longer be tax-effected after 2018. Alimony paid under existing judgments will not be affected, but any post-2018 judgment modifying an existing alimony order will be.

This is a big deal, and it's important that your lawyer understands tax implications!

And it looks like the Republican tax bill will eliminate tax-preferred treatment of alimony. The provision probably will be prospective, so if you're paying or receiving alimony now, you won't be affected, but stay tuned ...
