I’ve had 3 clients reach out to me today regarding potential “roof leaks” and then my husband discovered we too have some sort of “leak” in one of the rooms in our house. I immediately hopped on a call with my roofer Troy Hampe with Troy Hampe - Guardian Roofing Texas and learned something new today that I wanted to pass along to all of you.
With the recent unusual snowfall in Houston, many homeowners (like me) may be experiencing ice dams for the first time.
Here's what you need to know to protect your home:
What Are Ice Dams?
When snow accumulates on your roof, heat from your attic can cause the snow to melt. This melted snow then runs down toward your roof's edge, where colder temperatures cause it to refreeze. This creates a ridge of ice called an ice dam, that prevents proper drainage. As more snow melts, this can lead to water seeping under your shingles and causing leaks which can damage your home’s interior.
Signs of Ice Dams:
• Icicles hanging from the roof‘s edge
• Water stains or leaks inside the house
• Ice buildup along the roofline
While there’s not much you can do about ice dams, if you’re able to safely do so:
• You can remove snow from the roof
• Use de-icing products designed for roofs
• Contact a roofing professional to address the issue as soon as possible.
Below is my trusted roofer’s info. I’ve also attached a few pictures for reference.
