Over this past year, I’ve helped dozens of online experts…

➡️ Defend their brand names
➡️ Demand late payments, and
➡️ Enforce intellectual property provisions in their contracts.

In each of these scenarios, there was a common theme

OVERWHELM.

The overwhelm that comes with navigating the inevitable legal hurdles of growing a successful 6-figure business…in real-time AND without the proper legal protections.

I know that the legal aspects of running an online business can be overwhelming! 😩

And I know how easy it is to allow the overwhelm to keep you stuck.

✨If you want to get clear on contracts and protect your IP with a customized legal strategy, comment “ME” and I’ll send you a DM! ✨

I’m looking to help online experts become the focused, clear, and confident CEOs their businesses need in 2024 and beyond!

Comment “ME” if that’s you.👇🏽

"You can prevent bad things from happening by owning it. You can shape the outcomes." - co-host of the radio show

Ramses Ja and co-host recently filed for the trademark “White Lives Matter.” That decision carries a lot of weight and will undoubtedly be met with opposition.

But at the end of the day, he and his co-host will have sole ownership over the phrase, should it register. They can sue anyone who uses the saying for financial gain.

As an attorney for Black creatives and entrepreneurs, I often get met with opposition on the importance of legally protecting your work.

After all, people can still come after you. It may seem like you can't shape the outcomes you hope for.

It's true: the legalities of business are anything but black and white. But as this real-life example shows, taking ownership of a creative asset means you can protect something you care about.

It means you can build lasting wealth for future generations on your own terms.

If we haven’t learned anything from the justifiably devastating downfall, is that we ought not continuously fumble the bag.

I offer a 1:1 VIP Day, where I provide a comprehensive legal audit of your business and a customized legal strategy to help you identify the inevitable legal hurdles of business, establish a solid legal foundation, and identify assets to grow your bottom line for generations to come.

is now a textbook example of what it means to influence the culture but not own it.

Obviously, his racist and antisemitic remarks are inexcusable.

HOWEVER, as an attorney for creative 6 and 7-figure entrepreneurs, I also find it inexcusable that Adidas was the sole owner of all design rights to existing Yeezy products as well as previous and new colorways under their partnership.

I’m committed to a world where Black people's creative gifts are honored through equitable business partnerships that build generational wealth and legacy. And this Adidas deal .... ain't it.

Kanye doesn’t own anything but his name. Adidas can cut ties and still sell Yeezy products because they own that IP outright. They literally used him for his brand, image, and likeness.

This might be considered “standard” in certain industries … but why?

It’s unbelievable that an artist as big as Kanye signed such a ridiculous contract. Prominent folks in the Black community told him years ago to just do a shoe brand on his own. I guess he should have listened. But still, it’s sad.

Black people shouldn’t have to be so skeptical of collaborations with big brands, but obviously, there is reason to be. Even for someone like Kanye.

I know it’s tempting to accept an offer from a big brand for your book deal, documentary, or podcast. I work behind the scenes on these legal contracts and deals all the time.

Remember: you don’t have to accept whatever companies are throwing your way - there’s always room to negotiate.

This a lesson for all creative entrepreneurs to protect your IP from predatory brands and make sure you're paid what you're truly worth. That big brand isn't your savior. You're the one bringing all the creative gifts, and that's worth some ownership.

There's a lot of things you can do to make sure you're getting the best legal team possible. But here are the five key things that will help you make sure you're hiring the right kind of legal on your team:

1. Make sure they have experience in your industry and know the laws that impact your business.

2. Check their references (and call them if necessary).

3. Ask for references from former clients or peers—make sure to ask around!

4. Ask about their training and experience in general, not just with specific issues or cases; it's important to find out what kinds of skills they bring to the table as well.

5. Do some research on their law firm; see if there are any connections between them and other companies that might be relevant to your business (i.e., if they worked closely with another company that was sued recently).

Privacy policies are a hot topic right now, and for good reason. Without one, you could get sued or fined by the government or private third parties.

That's because a privacy policy tells users how you collect and store their data. If you don't have one, it's basically like saying, "You can do whatever you want with our users' information."

But this isn't just about avoiding lawsuits—it's also about protecting your business from getting shut down by Google and Facebook Ads. Your ads will be disabled if they don't meet the requirements of their policies, which means you won't be able to run any campaigns until you put together a privacy policy that does meet them.

When's the last time you updated your privacy policy?
