In 1904, Philip A. Payton Jr. did something revolutionary.
He founded the Afro-American Realty Company, the first major Black-owned real estate firm in New York with a simple but powerful mission:

Help Black families navigate a racist housing system that was designed to exclude them.

White landlords wouldn't rent to Black tenants. Banks wouldn't finance Black buyers. The system said: "You don't qualify."
But Payton understood something critical: If you know how the system works, you can help people succeed within it.
He bought buildings from fearful white owners. He opened them to Black families. He created pathways to ownership.
Within a decade, 75% of New York's Black population moved to Harlem.
That wasn't just housing. That was economic agency.
120 years later, that same tension exists.
