“Catch flights, not child support arrears…” may no longer be an option.
According to recent reports, the U.S. State Department is ramping up enforcement against parents with significant unpaid child support by revoking passports for those with large arrearages, and eventually potentially for balances over just $2,500. Yes… your passport may now care about your parenting plan too.
The government says the goal is simple: encourage parents to meet their legal and financial obligations to their children. And while social media loves a good “passport revoked” headline, the reality is this:
- Child support is not about punishment.
- It is about providing stability for children.
- Food, housing, healthcare, extracurriculars, and everyday expenses don’t stop because parents are no longer together.
Now… before anyone starts typing in ALL CAPS, we also know child support cases can become complicated. Job loss, income changes, unfair calculations, lack of access to children, and enforcement issues are all very real concerns that deserve proper legal attention.
But one thing is certain:
Ignoring the issue rarely makes it better.
If you are behind, it may be time to seek a modification, negotiate a payment plan, or address the matter proactively before travel plans turn into “staycation plans.”
What are your thoughts on passport revocations for unpaid child support?
Do you think this is an effective enforcement tool , or does it go too far?
