Divorce can follow a child into the classroom.

Research on divorce and children’s academic performance shows that changes in family structure can affect test scores, classroom engagement, motivation, and long-term educational outcomes. But the research also points to something parents can influence: the amount of conflict children are exposed to and the consistency and support they experience between households.

Our latest blog takes a closer look at what research shows about how divorce affects children’s academic performance and the factors that may help protect children during and after divorce.

There is no one-size-fits-all roadmap for divorce, child custody, or other family law matters. The legal issues matter, but so do the individual circumstances behind them.

In this video, Evan B. Boyko, Associate Attorney at Skillern Firm, explains why one of the most important parts of representing a client is taking the time to truly listen.

Evan has experience handling child custody matters, complex divorce cases, and property and asset division, allowing him to approach each case with the client’s specific goals and circumstances in mind.

Giving clients the space to be heard helps an attorney better understand what they are facing, what matters most to them, and how to approach the case in a way that reflects their goals.

The information you are most uncomfortable sharing may be exactly what your attorney needs to know.

In this video, Kathleen LeFevre, Senior Associate Attorney at Skillern Firm, explains why complete honesty with your family law attorney is critical.

Your attorney cannot prepare for information they do not have. When important details are withheld, your lawyer may learn them for the first time in court, at the same moment as the judge. That can limit the attorney’s ability to respond, explain the circumstances, or protect your position.

Tell your attorney the facts early. A prepared attorney can address challenging information before the court room.

Back-to-school co-parenting does not require sharing every classroom detail, but important school information should not be left to chance.

Your court order or divorce decree should always be your starting point. Texas custody orders commonly require parents to share significant information about a child’s education in a timely manner, but the exact responsibilities can vary by case.

Depending on your decree, important updates may include:

• Enrollment or school changes
• Serious attendance, academic, or disciplinary concerns
• IEP, 504, testing, or evaluation information
• Meetings or deadlines requiring parental involvement
• Changes affecting school pickup, drop-off, or parenting time

Under a standard possession order, the parent with the child may also need to notify the school and the other parent when the child cannot be returned to school as scheduled.

Keep communication timely, factual, and focused on your child. Use the communication method required by your decree, share relevant documents, include deadlines or action items, and avoid using your child as the messenger. Written communication can also help create a clear record and reduce misunderstandings.

If you are unsure what your decree requires or the wording is difficult to understand, Skillern Firm can help you review your order and clarify your responsibilities.

The biggest mistake in a family law matter is making a permanent decision before you understand the consequences.

A consultation is not only for someone who is ready to file for divorce. It is for anyone who needs clarity before making a decision that could affect their children, property, finances, or future.

A family law consultation can help you:

• Understand your legal rights and responsibilities
• Learn what to expect from the Texas legal process
• Identify potential financial and custody concerns
• Discuss divorce, modifications, or enforcement issues
• Evaluate your options before responding or taking action
• Prepare the documents and information your attorney may need
• Create a strategy based on your specific circumstances

You may benefit from a consultation if you are considering divorce, facing a custody dispute, being denied parenting time, concerned about complex assets, questioning an existing court order, or simply unsure what to do next.

You do not need to have everything figured out before speaking with a Houston family law attorney. That is what the consultation is designed to help you do.

When parenting time is being denied, your memory alone may not be enough.

In this video, Ali Shah, Of Counsel at Skillern Firm, explains why documentation can be critical when one parent appears to be interfering with a child’s relationship with the other parent.

Keep a clear record of denied access, missed exchanges, inconsistent communication, and other concerning behavior. Save relevant messages and supporting information from any professionals involved. Before making audio or video recordings, speak with your attorney about what is legally appropriate.

Organized, consistent evidence can help your attorney understand the pattern, evaluate the situation, and determine what legal remedies may be available.
