Researchers tested an AI system on CT scans from 1,241 retired workers with documented occupational asbestos exposure. The system achieved 97% balanced accuracy in detecting pleural plaques, compared with about 91% for specialist radiologists and 80% for a radiologist without specialized asbestos experience.

Pleural plaques do not mean someone has mesothelioma and are not considered a precursor to the cancer. The AI technology also still needs external validation, but it could eventually help screen large populations of asbestos-exposed workers more efficiently.

During the renovation of this house, asbestos-containing materials were discovered in multiple areas; including insulation, HVAC ductwork, flooring, adhesives, roofing materials, Sheetrock, and even electrical wiring.

This walkthrough shows where asbestos can be encountered during home remodeling and why demolition and renovation work can create serious exposure concerns when asbestos-containing materials are disturbed.

For construction workers, remodelers, electricians, HVAC technicians, roofers, and homeowners renovating older properties, identifying potentially hazardous materials before demolition begins can be an important safety step.

Watch as we walk through the house and examine the areas where asbestos was discovered and why proper testing, professional remediation, PPE, and appropriate safety procedures matter.

Could a tumor biomarker help doctors better understand which pleural mesothelioma patients may respond to immunotherapy? A Japanese study found that patients with higher VISTA expression had longer median overall survival after nivolumab treatment, but researchers emphasize that larger prospective studies are needed to confirm the findings and determine their clinical value.
