I had a wonderful Sunday hiking around the Red Bluff outcrop along the Colorado River just south of Bastrop. The photo shows me standing near the contact between the top of the Calvert Bluff Formation and the base of the Carrizo Formation.

The upper Calvert Bluff Formation, where I am standing, consists primarily of organic-rich, silty mudstones with some interbedded fine sand layers. The Carrizo Formation above it is a thick, well-sorted, cross-bedded sandstone, characteristic of its deposition in a high-energy shoreline environment. Cross-beds are difficult to observe at this location.

The contact between these formations is sharp and easily observed in the outcrop, located between my waist and knee. This contact represents a significant depositional change from the marine-influenced, finer-grained sediments of the upper Calvert Bluff deposits to wave-dominated shoreline sands of the Carrizo Formation.

At the top of the outcrop, the Carrizo Formation is capped by Neogene alluvial conglomerates (not visible in this photo). These gravels represent a much younger depositional episode, significantly postdating the formations below.

It’s always exciting to get out in the field and see these geologic formations firsthand. Plans are to go back out there soon—let me know if you’d like to join!

Had a Great Time at the OGGN Event!

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending Freddy Goerges' Oil and Gas Global Network (OGGN) event at The Ranch Office. OGGN is a fantastic networking event that brings together great industry professionals while also supporting an important cause—raising funds for RedM, a group dedicated to ending s*x trafficking.

While there, I had the opportunity to meet Michael O’Sullivan, Executive Producer at 23 Martini Inc., who was interviewing industry professionals. I was fortunate to be selected for an interview, hosted by Delfina Govia, and had a great time discussing my work and industry insights.

Also, a big shoutout to Houston Apparel Co. for their presence at the event! They are doing great work providing high-quality apparel that represents the spirit and energy of Houston.

It was an incredible experience all around, and they somehow managed to make me look good—or at least better than usual! Check out the video below!
