A few years ago, Sheriff Gonzales crowed in the press about the arrest of Ronald Smith, a young man accused of two separate murders. Despite our protestations that both cases and their investigations were dangerously flawed, his judge set his bonds absurdly high and raised them even further when pretrial services accused him of violating his home confinement. In December 2021, Ronald was acquitted of one allegation of murder.

This past week he was acquitted of the second murder.

These acquittals were not the result of ‘crazy’ or ‘liberal’ juries, but rather the inevitable consequence of inescapable, cold, hard facts. Both juries took their jobs very seriously.

Don’t hold your breath waiting for those who rushed to pass judgment on Ronald Smith to recognize their mistakes.

Mr. Bromwich was the right choice to select as an advisor. He is fantastic at evaluating problems. That the HCDAO has obviously benched him is absurd. The proper response would be to hire Mr. Bromwich to conduct his own investigation.

Commissioners Court approved hiring an outside investigator to help with the Harding Street raid investigation. Nine months later, emails show he’s been sidelined.

There is absolutely no excuse for these closed communities to not have been fully tested and properly quarantined by now. This is an inexcusable failure of leadership.

At one prison, more than 750 inmates were actively infected with the coronavirus Monday, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Lawyers representing the state in the criminal case against Arkema failed to disclose evidence that was beneficial to the defense, a state district judge ruled Monday before postponing opening statements from today until Thursday.
