🇺🇸 On This Day in History — August 10, 1927

Today marks the formal dedication of the Mount Rushmore project in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

The enormous undertaking would ultimately transform a granite mountainside into one of America’s most recognizable landmarks, featuring George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.

Sculptor Gutzon Borglum directed the project, which took 14 years to complete. Hundreds of workers used drills, jackhammers, and dynamite to remove roughly 450,000 tons of rock. Remarkably, no workers died during the carving itself.

The monument was never fully completed according to Borglum’s original vision, but the faces he created—each about 60 feet tall—have become an enduring piece of American history.

🏔️ Nearly a century later, Mount Rushmore still draws millions of visitors to the Black Hills.
