Improper Resuscitation of a Newborn Can Cause Brain Damage:
Was your child born with no heart rate, not breathing? If so, your child was likely resuscitated after birth. Brain damage can result from improper techniques used by healthcare providers when resuscitating a baby. The Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) sets the standard of care healthcare providers must meet while resuscitating a baby after birth. For example, the NRP provides that bag and mask ventilation should start within 1 minute of birth and that an alternative airway, like an endotracheal tube, should be inserted shortly thereafter. Medications like epinephrine should also be given within minutes of birth. These standards are used to ensure that the baby receives oxygen and to jump start the baby’s heart. Failure to follow the NRP standards in a timely manner can lead to a catastrophic outcome, brain damage to your child from lack of oxygen and blood flow to the brain.
