Larry McDougal, the President of The State Bar of Texas is not fit for the office and his comments are beneath the dignity of the role. Mr. McDougal in a recent Facebook post referred accused a person wearing a of electioneering simply for wearing the t-shirt. Further, 2015 Facebook posts have been uncovered showing Mr. McDougal referring to the Movement as a terrorist organization.
Attorneys have a duty to the communities that we serve to ensure social justice and to be a voice for marginalized communities. That is the legacy of our profession.
To be as tone deaf and closed minded as to not acknowledge the legitimate issues around race and justice that our society currently faces is proof positive that Mr. McDougal is not prepared for the mantle that he carries.
He must do the honorable thing and resign. His subsequent apology changes nothing. He has the absolute right to continue serving as a member of the bar, and should seek to learn and grow from this@moment, but he is certainly unfit to lead and represent the attorneys of the State of Texas.
