Debi Petriscak was 64 when her marriage ended after 38 years. The separation from the father of her four children upended the retirement she had been envisioning.

As part of the settlement, Petriscak, now 71, took ownership of the family home in Calabasas, Calif. But maintenance costs were high, and the memories made living in the house painful.

When she sold it about four years later, she was hit with a nearly $200,000 tax bill. Because she was filing as a single person, her capital gains tax exclusion dropped to $250,000 from $500,000.

This “single penalty” resulted in a substantial tax hit that she could have avoided had the home been sold soon after the divorce. And the sting didn't end there.

Here, Petriscak and three others open up to us about their post-divorce retirement finances and how they spend their time.

Having watched the TRO hearing as well as the legislative hearings, this was the right move for Camp Mystic to make. Id like to think they withdrew after hearing from the families and still having a camper missing, but heard enough to believe they did it before they were again denied a renewal license. It’s shocking and so sad how complacent and ill prepared they were for the July 4th emergency. Looks like they may have finally received some good legal advice instead of not reporting deaths of campers and counselors, and apparently not following the preservation of evidence order.

Through the lawyer lens, this is an interesting read as were the few days of recent hearings. As a parent, I can only imagine the heartbreak of hearing all of the evidence.

This caption is a little misleading, as the Court did grant a TRO for the affected property.

Their request for a temporary injunction maintains that any changes at the camp could destroy evidence needed for their lawsuit.
