Friends, I am considering voting in the Democratic primary in Harris County (Houston). On the Republican side, there is little locally to consider - mostly 1 candidate (and I signed for many Rs running). There are a few statewide elections, CCA (Court of Criminal Appeals) elections, where AG Paxton is running candidates against 3 CCA judges who voted against Paxton's authority to challenge elections locally. It was 8-1 all Rs in CCA. Paxton was, is, and always will be wrong - Texas Constitution is explicit. You believe in rule of law, or not. The 8 are correct. Whether we like it or not, these laws matter. As a CDL (criminal defense lawyer), I have little use for Keller, but I 110% believe in Hervey and Slaughter (who again this week has complained about infringement on gun rights). No, my consideration is Tom DeLay moved me into Sheila Jackson Lee's congressional district, and I have an opportunity to get her out of office (per the polls, Sheila can finally lose); I have opportunity in D primary to remove a judge who routinely violates a defendant's right to a hearing before revoking and raising bail (the candidate against this judge is a progressive and dear, personal friend, who literally expects to lose next go round, and to be fair - presiding judge has never done any complaint to any client of mine and usually rules in favor of my client; when judge does not, it has always been in zone of reasonable disagreement); and nominate a dear, personal friend for a R bench who has worked both as an ADA and APD who will follow the law (if my friend wins the primary will be no less, and likely a better judge on a criminal bench). I have not yet decided. I am open to comments. This will be cross posted.
