"Will my rates go up if I use my PIP?"
We hear this all the time. We've even had clients refuse to use their own Personal Injury Protection (PIP) benefits over it, after paying the premium every month for years.
The honest answer: an insurer can raise your rate after a wreck, even one you didn't cause. Think about how backwards that is, especially with PIP. PIP exists to pay your medical bills and lost income no matter who caused the crash. You paid extra for exactly that. And the fear of using it works in the insurance company's favor.
Underinsured Motorist (UIM) coverage protects you when the driver who hit you doesn't carry enough insurance.
If your rate goes up after a wreck you didn't cause, ask your insurer to explain it in writing, shop your policy, and consider a complaint with the Texas Department of Insurance.
The insurance company would love for you to leave that money in the chest. Don't lose it. Use it.
