It's always nice when your work takes you somewhere you've never been before. My probate case was first on the docket this morning in the Trinity County Courthouse in Groveton, Texas. Built in the Neoclassical style that was popular over 100 years ago, this courthouse has served the residents of Trinity County (pop. 13,000) since 1914.

Justice may not always be blind, but in Texas it takes place in beautiful buildings. On the way home after a long but productive day in San Antonio I decided to stop for a quick meal and a pic of the Guadalupe County Courthouse in Seguin.

I always enjoy being a traveling lawyer in this great state because I get to appear in these old To Kill A Mockingbird courthouses. Just finished an estate hearing in the Gonzales County Courthouse, which was built in 1894 and restored to its original appearance. Now I have to race back to Houston to meet the wife at the rodeo to see Nickleback tonight.

Another day, another courthouse. Just spent 5 hours researching the deed histories for 19 properties in the Montgomery County Clerk's office. I was not looking forward to doing this, but the staff here was very helpful so I was able to finish everything with time to spare before meeting with another client in Conroe.

During my recent trip to the Jack Daniel's Distillery, I had to stop by the Moore County Courthouse in Lynchburg, Tennessee. Interestingly, this is a dry county despite being the home of the world's most popular whiskey. 🥃

It has been a while since I've added a photo to my lawyer page Capitol Domes album, but here's the dome-less Tennessee State Capitol building in Nashville. Unfortunately, this is one of 12 state capitol buildings without a dome, but it's still a beautiful and historic place.

On the way home from San Antonio I stopped by the Colorado County Courthouse located in Columbus, Texas. There are 254 counties in this state so I have a long way to go to visit them all.

It's been a while since I posted a courthouse pic, so here's the one in Goliad County that looks spooky and haunted on a nice Halloween night. I'm on my way to my dad's to take him into Corpus Christi for a quick appointment tomorrow then I'll head to San Antonio to meet with some clients before driving back home on Thursday.

It’s springtime, and here’s the ice cold truth when it comes to your estate. I occasionally get inquiries from people who have just been laid off and are required to sign confidentiality and non-disparagement agreements in exchange for receiving severance pay. That demand is now considered unlawful under a recent NLRB decision. However, please note that NLRB rulings do not apply to independent contractors, managers, most supervisors, public sector employees, some agricultural workers, as well as the airline and railroad sectors of employment.

If your company lays you off, your employer might offer you severance pay — but only if you agree to adhere to a number of restrictions.
