Republican businessman Lawrence Duran was convicted in one of the largest Medicare fraud cases in U.S. history after federal prosecutors said he helped orchestrate a scheme that generated more than $205 million in fraudulent Medicare claims. He was sentenced to 50 years in federal prison in 2011.
President Trump later commuted Duran's sentence as part of a series of clemency actions issued near the end of his first term, a decision that drew criticism from some watchdog groups and praise from clemency advocates. The DOJ described the case as one of the largest Medicare fraud schemes prosecuted in the United States, involving more than $205 million in fraudulent claims submitted to Medicare.
