PROCRASTINATING ON DRAFTING OR UPDATING YOUR WILL?

Talking about Wills is not a topic any of us relish. However, not having an estate plan can be detrimental financially, not only in terms of taxes but also in terms of the distribution of your estate. Without a plan, which includes a properly drafted and executed Will, the transfer of your hard earned assets upon death can become complicated and costly, and your desires to provide for your loved ones can be uprooted.
If you need a Will, or need to update one, call The Law Offices of Michael P. Von Blon at 713-681-5288.

Here's Today's Tip... What is failure?
What’s the secret to success? We’re not sure if we have the answer, but we know one thing: Mindset matters.
When something doesn’t go our way -- doesn’t go according to our plan -- and those negative voices come shouting and doubting, “Failure, failure, failure!”…when the self-doubt creeps in…
This is where perspective and reframing become such powerful tools.
Nelson Mandela once said, “I never lose. I either win or learn.”
John C. Maxwell wrote a best-selling book that goes by a similar title: Sometimes You Win, Sometimes You Learn.
The isn’t that you’ll never fail. You will…when you try. The point is that failure is a powerful teacher. Instead of looking at failure negatively -- as something to avoid at all costs -- we have to reframe and view it as a learning opportunity.
As John Maxwell says, “Fail early, fail often and always fail forward.”
There are two important takeaways here. First, try. Don’t not try out of fear of failure. The next try -- whether you “win” or you “learn” -- may be the gateway to success.
Consider this quote from Michael Jordan, the greatest basketball player of all time, who “failed” 50% of the time: “I can accept failure. Everyone fails at something. But I can’t accept not trying.”
Secondly, when you fail -- and you will fail when you try -- recognize that there’s a huge difference between the statements “I failed” versus “I am failure”.
We encourage you to keep forging ahead in your journey, starting from wherever you are with whatever you’ve got.
If fear of failing is holding you back, consider that the next attempt may be the successful path you desire. And if you do “fail”, it may be the doorway to learning the secret to success.
If you’ve failed before, recognize, first, that you are NOT a failure. You are a brave, courageous soul. What can you learn from that attempt? What can it teach you about success?
Consider this beautiful analogy from Jacob Riis: “Look at a stone cutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred-and-first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not the last blow that did it, but all that had gone before.”
Be the stone cutter. Continue to hammer away at your rock, chipping away, effort by effort. As Robert Collier says, “Success is the sum of small efforts -- repeated day in and day out.”

Thinking about Divorce, and don’t know how to proceed?

After marital counseling has failed, what steps do you need to take to prepare for divorce?
BEFORE telling your spouse you are going to file for divorce, you must do the following:
1. Make sure your email account is secure. If not, obtain a private email account that is password protected from your spouse.
2. make a list of all bank account, investment and retirement accounts, and confirm you know your user ID and passwords to access the accounts;
3. Research names of board certified attorneys, and meet with at least two. (You want to be comfortable not only with their legal knowledge, but also with their ability to listen to you and represent you in the manner you deem appropriate.) That attorney may also give you advice that is vital for you to follow prior to filing.
4. Hire the attorney that meets that criteria.

Do Your Part. .

October kicks off the 17th year of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM). This year, Americans are spending more time than ever online as the pandemic has changed our virtual habits. While protecting yourself against cybersecurity crimes might not be top of mind, you should educate yourself so you can be aware of tools available to keep yourself and your businesses safe online to better protect your part of cyberspace.

This year’s NCSAM theme, announced by CISA and the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), is “Do Your Part. .”

Each week in October a different cybersecurity theme will be highlighted – specifically designed to provide you with impactful information.

Week 1, October 5: If You Connect It, Protect It

Computers, tablets and other internet-connected devices left unprotected are extremely susceptible to threats and viruses. In our constantly connected world, it is a device owner’s responsibility to care for the health of their devices just as they would care for their own health.

October 1 and 2: Official NCSAM Kick-off

Week 1, October 5: If You Connect It, Protect It

Computers, tablets and other internet-connected devices left unprotected are extremely susceptible to threats and viruses. In our constantly connected world, it is a device owner’s responsibility to care for the health of their devices just as they would care for their own health.

Week 2, October 12: Securing Devices at Home and Work

2020 has shifted most of our home, school and business life online. We are now more connected than ever before, bringing about new and potential vulnerabilities. There are several ways to secure your devices, starting with enabling two factor authentication, creating strong passwords and doing research on your own digital presence.

Week 3, October 19: Securing Internet-Connected Devices in Healthcare

Even if you do not work directly in the healthcare industry, you might have health records living online, internet-connected health devices and/or profiles on wellness apps. While these exist to provide health benefits, they also expose the healthcare industry to a person’s own vulnerabilities that cyber criminals seek to exploit. Failure to secure these healthcare devices comes at a grave cost and could mean life or death.

Week 4, October 26: The Future of Connected Devices

The final week of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month will focus on the future of internet-connected devices. No matter what the future holds, users must continue to do their part to ensure the safety of cyberspace.

Better Protect Yourself Online
At the Law Offices of Michael P. Von Blon, we encourage you to consider the below steps to be better protected online.

You can also access valuable tools such as NCSAM tip sheets and resources here, which exist to help reduce cybersecurity risks.

Get Involved
Throughout the month, we invite you to join us in promoting cybersecurity awareness by using NCSAM’s hashtag on social media. You can also support cybersecurity awareness by passing on cybersecurity tips to friends, family and coworkers.

We also invite you to register for the virtual event “Smart Devices Need Smart Security: Securing Your Business in an Internet of Everything World” on October 13th. This will be hosted by the National Cybersecurity Alliance.
