What is Esophageal Cancer?
Anatomy – The esophagus is the tube connecting the throat to the stomach. The inner lining of the esophagus is made up of mucosa and submucosa, which is where esophageal cancers can develop.

This type of cancer occurs when cells lining the esophagus mutate and begin to grow out of control. The abnormal cells will create a tumor within the esophagus, metastasizing and invading other parts of the body.

Esophageal cancer is the sixth leading cause of cancer-related deaths and the eighth most common cancer worldwide1. It is treatable, but rarely curable.

Why Veterans are at Risk for Esophageal Cancer
For nearly 35 years, the water at Camp Lejeune contained very high levels of 2 chlorinated solvents: perchloroethylene (PCE) and trichloroethylene (TCE), among other chemicals, some of which have been linked to several types of cancer, including esophageal cancer. Military personnel, their families, and anyone living on the base during the years of 1953 through 1987 were exposed to these and other chemicals in the water on base.

Symptoms
Difficulty swallowing, painful swallowing
Hoarseness / Coughing
Severe, unexplained weight loss
Chest, throat or back pain/pressure
Coughing up blood
Vomiting, regurgitating
If you are experiencing any combination of these symptoms but have not yet been diagnosed, it is suggested you contact a physician for an assessment. If you spent time at Camp Lejuene and have been diagnosed with esophageal cancer, please contact us immediately for consultation with an attorney.

Connection to the chemicals found in the water at Camp Lejeune
According to ATSDR/ CDC2, at least one study evaluating contact with TCE and/or PCE determined esophageal cancer as a “health effect” of exposure to these chemicals. At Camp Lejeune, the levels were over a thousand times higher than the EPA maximum safe levels.

Why choose the Nations Law Firm
The Nations Law Firm is honored to fight for our Veterans who served at Marine Base Camp Lejeune, and for all those injured by its contaminated water supply. To read more about the different illnesses and chemicals that contaminated the water on base and their connection to serious health problems, please visit our Camp Lejeune page or call our office at 800-800-1102.

On August 25, 2022, the Office of Inspector General (OIG) published their audit of the Veterans Benefits Administration titled Improved Processing Needed for Veterans’ Claims of Contaminated Water Exposure at Camp Lejeune. OIG was able to conclude that approximately 21,000 claims or 37 percent, were incorrectly processed for two primary reasons: 1) prematurely denying claims; and 2) assigning incorrect effective dates of benefits entitlement.
On January 13, 2017 the Office of the Federal Register published the final rule titled Diseases Associated with Exposure to Contaminants in the Water Supply at Camp Lejeune granting eight presumptive diseases associated with service at Camp Lejeune. The effective date of the Final Rule was March 14, 2017. Approximately 57,500 claims were submitted to the Veterans Benefits Administration relating to Camp Lejeune Injuries between March 14, 2017 and March 31, 2021. This timeframe was used as the audit period.
Claims that were prematurely denied were due to insufficient evidence to process a claim. OIG was able to identify that veterans were not properly contacted to obtain supporting evidence before being denied. The cause of the denials were found to be due to a lack of experience of handling these claims and a supervisor providing incorrect guidance.
Claims that were granted and did not receive an accurate date of entitlement for benefits amounted to 14% of the 37% of mishandled claims. It is estimated that veterans were underpaid a total of $13.8 million.
The Office of Inspector General provided two recommendations as a result of their audit. Based on error rates, OIG recommends consolidating the Camp Lejeune-related claims to the Louisville VA Regional Office and/or reporting to the OIG the results of targeted quality reviews across all regional offices until the accuracy rate meets or exceeds the Veterans Benefits Administration’s goals.
The Nations Law Firm continues to monitor the Camp Lejeune Litigation, we are honored to represent and fight for our Veterans. To read more about Camp Lejeune, please visit https://justiceforveterans.info/reports-resources/ or call our office at (800)800-1102.

Signed! The Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2022 has been signed into law by President Biden on August 10, 2022. The bill is a part of the Sergeant First Class Heath Robinson Honoring our Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics (PACT) Act of 2022. Through bipartisan work of the United States Congress, this historic legislation will allow those injured by exposure to the toxic drinking water at Camp Lejeune seek monetary recovery for damages from the United States government.

The PACT Act is veteran-focused legislation that expands VA health care for Veterans who have exposed to toxic substances.

The Nations Law Firm is proud to represent Veterans, family members, and civilians who were stationed at, worked on, or otherwise spent time at Camp Lejeune who were injured by exposure to the base’s toxic water supply. You may qualify for compensation under the Camp Lejeune Justice Act.

For decades officials were aware of water contamination on U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, but never addressed the problem. From 1953 to 1987, those who lived, worked, or otherwise spent time on the base, cooked with, bathed in, and drank the contaminated water to their peril. I...
