Just finishing up a three day conference for Virginia Recovery Courts in Harrisonburg, Virginia with my crew from the Hopewell-Prince George-Surry Recovery Court.

Let me know if you have any questions - I am happy to talk to you about it!

If you aren’t familiar with what we do, here is a good description from Google AI:

Recovery court, also known as drug court, is a specialized court program designed to help non-violent offenders with substance use disorders overcome their addiction and avoid future criminal behavior. These courts provide a judicially supervised, intensive treatment program, combining treatment, counseling, and supervision to support individuals in their recovery journey.

You should know:

When you put your garbage can out on the curb or in the alley for pickup, the law considers this “abandoned property.” This means law enforcement (or anyone else for that matter) can go through your garbage or even take it away. When police do this, it is most often because they suspect criminal activity is occurring and are trying to see if they can find incriminating evidence that could lead to a search warrant for your property.

Be smart and stay safe.

You should know:

In Virginia, the police may order you out of your car or order you to stay in your car during a traffic stop. The Supreme Court has held that this is an officer safety issue. While you may disagree, the time to argue about this is in the courtroom, not the street. Traffic stops can escalate during arguments.

Be smart and stay safe.

Some new laws go into effect today across Virginia. Here is a big one - EVERYONE in your car, front seat and backseat, must wear a seatbelt. And you, as the driver, are responsible for making sure your passengers are in compliance. YOU get the ticket.

This is what’s known as a “secondary offense.” This means law enforcement cannot pull you over for this offense, but LEOs will be looking for these infractions. Be smart and stay safe.

I was overwhelmed today when I was recognized for my contributions in Virginia’s Sixth Judicial District by the Riverside Community Criminal Justice Board. I have spent the past 30 years representing and helping folks who can’t always help themselves. I am happy and I am humbled. Thank you.

Before you head to Court this morning, check and see if it’s open. Most courts in Central Virginia are closed.

The City of Hopewell was kind enough to let us know that City Point (the street in front of my office) will be closed Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and maybe Friday for repair.

If you need to come by the office, you will be able to park on the side street (4th Avenue).
