Friends of the Appomattox Regional Library System The Hopewell-Prince George Friends of the Library is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. The Federal Tax ID is 54-1444884.

Role of the Friends

Advocacy: The friends are able to advocate on behalf of the library at the local, state, and federal levels. Financial: The friends help provide the resources for additional programming; much-needed equipment, support for children’s summer reading, and special events throughout the year. Service: Many of our friends choose to give the gift of their time to the Friends bookstore, fundraisers, book sales, and outreach events that spread the word and raise funds for the library. If you wish to donate to The HPG Friends of the Library by writing a check, please make your check payable to The HPG Friends of the Library and send it to P.O Box 178 Hopewell, VA 23860. Located at the Hopewell Library on the first floor to the left of the main entrance. We are a used bookstore, stocking a selection of fiction, classics, nonfiction, juvenile, and children’s books at very reasonable prices. You can search our shelves for your favorite author or just browse by subject. Each trip to our store is always a treasure hunt and you can be assured that every purchase helps us to support the Appomattox Regional Library System (ARLS). Proceeds from the bookstore support children's and adult reading programs, purchase of equipment, materials, and resources to enhance library services beyond the library’s budget.

Poetry. Prose. Pizza. What more could you ask for?

Please join us this Thursday, October 8th, at the Hopewell Library for a a fun, family-friendly literary open mic for readers, writers, performers, and anyone who just loves a good story! We call it Poetry, Prose, and Pizza! And yes, there's pizza!

Read an original poem or a short story. Read from your favorite author. Or just sit back, relax, and enjoy the talent our community has to offer.

Pizza from Luca's Italian Restaurant will be served at 5:30 pm. The open mic starts at 6pm. Our master of ceremonies will be none other than Nathan Richardson. Nathan is a performance poet, a published author, and Frederick Douglass Historian.

Whether you care to share, or are just there to listen, you're bound to have a great time. Bring your words. Bring your appetite. Bring your friends. We'll see you at Poetry, Prose, and Pizza.

“Give me liberty, or give me death!”

Those famous words were delivered by Patrick Henry at the Second Virginia Convention at St. John’s Church on March 23, 1775.

This Saturday, experience these words brought to life at Patrick Henry: One Man Show, presented by the Hopewell-Prince George Friends of the Library!

Join us for an afternoon of history and live entertainment as a historic interpreter portrays Patrick Henry and shares the story of his life and legacy as the first post-colonial Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Guests will also have the opportunity to hear a stirring rendition of his legendary “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death!” speech.

Location: Hopewell Library – HMA Room

Light refreshments and door prizes will also be available.

Join us on Saturday, October 10 from 2 pm to 4 pm for a special presentation of Patrick Henry: A One-Man Show at the Hopewell Library!

Guests will step back in time and learn about the life and accomplishments of Patrick Henry, the first post-colonial governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia. A historic interpreter from St. John’s Church in Richmond will bring Henry to life and even deliver a rendition of his famous “Give me liberty or give me death!” speech.

The afternoon will also include refreshments and door prizes, making this a great opportunity to enjoy history, meet members of the Friends of the Library, and learn more about their work in support of the Appomattox Regional Library System.

Come experience Virginia and American history brought to life. We hope to see you there!

It's almost October! That means that Poetry, Prose, and Pizza is just around the corner.

Join us on Thursday, October 8 for an evening of great food, creativity, and community!

Bring your favorite poem or piece of prose or share something you've written yourself! Whether you're a seasoned writer, an aspiring poet, or simply someone who enjoys listening to great stories and spoken word, everyone is welcome.

Looking for something new to read this fall? Join us tomorrow from 2:00–4:00 PM for the Fall Into a Good Book Swap at the Hopewell Library! The swap will be held in the HMA Room.

Bring along books you’re ready to pass on and swap them for something new-to-you. Patrons may exchange up to five books. It’s a fun and free way to refresh your bookshelf, discover a new favorite, and share great reads with others in the community.

The Friends of the Library is proud to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from September 15 through October 15!

The celebration began on September 15, marking the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, followed by Mexico on September 16 and Chile on September 18.

This year’s theme, “Unidos, Somos Más” or “Together, We Are More,” celebrates the strength, culture, history, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities.

The Appomattox Regional Library System offers a variety of books and eBooks exploring Hispanic American history, culture, stories, and experiences. Our Hopewell Library also features a Spanish-language collection for readers to enjoy.

These familiar words open the Preamble to the United States Constitution.

Today, September 17, we recognize Constitution Day and the signing of one of our nation’s founding documents. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about the Constitution, the rights and responsibilities it outlines, and the system of government it established.

The Appomattox Regional Library System has many resources available to help you explore these topics. Stop by your local ARLS branch and browse the many books and resources about American government, history, and constitutional law.
