On this day in 1843 a pioneering peace activist was born: Bertha von Suttner. She was the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (in fact, she's credited as the inspiration behind the very creation of the prize) and became the second female Nobel Prize laureate after Marie Skłodowska Curie.

Von Suttner is recognised as one of the leaders of the international peace movement of her time. Her influential anti-war novel 'Lay Down Your Arms' (1889) was provocative to many, but the anti-militaristic message caught on. At male-dominated peace congresses she stood out as a liberal and forceful leader. She was referred to as the "generalissimo of the peace movement."

She became a close friend of Alfred Nobel's in the 1870s, and they corresponded for years on the subject of peace. There is little doubt that von Suttner's friendship with Nobel had an impact on the contents of his will, and many give her the credit for his establishment of a peace prize. It is said that the letter written by Alfred to Bertha in January 1893 was the first time Alfred introduced the idea of a peace prize.

"Inform me, convince me, and then I will do something great for the movement," Alfred Nobel said to Bertha von Suttner.

”This country is on fire - they are celebrating from the President even down to the children in the rural areas. Everybody feels very honored. It is not my own prize. I am told that even the whole of Africa is celebrating.”

Wangari Maathai was in Nairobi, Kenya when she spoke to us shortly after hearing the news of her Nobel Peace Prize in October 2004. Even though it was a very bad phone line, her happiness after the announcement could be heard!

Maathai spoke about how those involved in her work would be encouraged by the recognition and know what they were doing was extremely important not only in Africa but throughout the world. She also told us how she had received congratulations from practically all over the world.

Maathai was first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a doctorate degree, the first female professor in Kenya and the first African woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
