On January 16, 2026, the Department of Homeland Security issued a new rule that changes how long R-1 religious workers must stay outside the U.S.

Before:
After 5 years in R-1 status, individuals had to leave the U.S. and remain abroad for 1 full year before becoming eligible again.

Now:
The 1-year abroad requirement has been removed.
After completing 5 years, the individual must depart the U.S., but does not need to remain outside for a full year to qualify for a new R-1 period.

This provides more flexibility and continuity for religious organizations.

📩 If you sponsor or work under R-1 status, this update may impact your long-term strategy.

🚨 IMMIGRATION UPDATE – IMPORTANT CLARIFICATION 🚨

In recent days, there has been a lot of information circulating about the possible cancellation or suspension of U.S. visas for nationals of multiple countries.

👉 Here is what we can confirm as of today:

✔️ The U.S. Department of State has issued internal guidance to pause the issuance of certain immigrant visas for nationals of specific countries while a policy review is conducted.
✔️ This measure mainly affects immigrant visas (consular processing for permanent residence).
✔️ Nonimmigrant visas (such as tourist, student, and temporary work visas) are generally not included.

⚠️ However, there has been no broad public proclamation or formal announcement stating that visas are being “cancelled” or permanently suspended.
No visas already issued have been revoked, and the scope and duration of the pause have not been fully defined.

📌 Immigration policies evolve quickly, and only officially published government guidance has legal effect.
We strongly recommend not making decisions based on rumors or incomplete information.

🔎 We are actively monitoring updates from USCIS and the U.S. Department of State and will share verified information as soon as it becomes available.

📩 If you have a pending case or concerns about how this may affect you, contact an immigration professional.
