So even though I am preparing for a trial on Monday, I had an experience that I need to share. Contractors and home improvements. Every one that owns a home will eventually repair or upgrade it. Recently, I met with some contractors about modifications to my residence. W-O-W, what an experience! First let me say as I have before, be a wise consumer and do your research! Next, it is important to consider that most constructions companies in Dade and Broward are drawing from the same labor pool. There is no influx of thousands of new works on a monthly basis that up-ends the given labor markets. Always get multiple estimates. Never pay for an estimate. Ask how much of the work is sub-contracted. If a contractor's estimate is way higher than most you have obtained, be direct but not rude. If you tell that contractor that his/her estimate was much higher than the others, that individual will almost always say it is because they do better work. If that is the case, ask what the average hourly rate they are paying their workers on the job is (I know contractors that would tell you what they are paying generally). I can guarantee you that the last guy that came over my home will not come back. It was like I was taking his deposition and every answer he gave put him in a deeper hole of his own bullsh*t. If someone is 20,000+ higher than the next guy and represents it is because the work is just that good, ask for a 3-4 year warranty on workmanship. If you are told it is one year, but if something happens 15-16 months down the road it will be taken care of, DO NOT BELIEVE THIS! I could write pages on the experience I had this morning at my house, but I don't have the time and don't want to bore you. Suffice it to say that common sense can take you a long way in dealing with someone you want to hire. If something sounds strange or untrue, it is most likely because your gut instincts are correct. Hire smart and you won't need a lawyer down the line.
