If you're speeding way too fast towards moving your child into a college dorm next month, here's a reminder:

Once your child turns 18, they are considered adults. While their high school will still communicate with you until they graduate, you will not be able to contact the college they've enrolled in and ask for any information about them without a Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) release form. The law recognizes your student's right to privacy. This form must either be signed on paper or electronically, depending on the school's requirements. In most cases, without it, you can't speak with financial aid officers, access grades, or advocate for your son or daughter with their university if it ever becomes necessary. Have the discussion with your child now and get the document signed and submitted by them so it doesn't get lost in the shuffle.
