MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF OF POLICE:

Immigration concerns have been part of the news for some time and most recently the issue has become even more prevalent due to a new United States Government administration. It is understandable when there is a lack of information and unclear rhetoric about immigration enforcement that residents are left to wonder what will happen in the upcoming weeks. The common concern is how will federal agents change their procedures or enforce Immigration laws that were previously not being enforced. I have attended several meetings with law enforcement and school officials and can attest the concerns are widespread in our community.



I wanted to share this message with our community to remind everyone and ensure that there has been no change in the procedures of the Hollister Police Department. The Hollister Police Department does not enforce federal law and we do not ask the legal status of the residents who we contact. Our priority is for the public safety of our community and every person who lives or visits here. We want any victim or witness of a crime to feel comfortable to contact us without any fear of being arrested for their legal status. This has always been the case with our department even before SB54 (2017) was passed in California restricting cooperation with Federal immigration agents. Additionally, this department has not received requests from federal agents to assist in any operation and SB54 does not allow for this department to cooperate outside of very few exceptions involving dangerous/violent fugitives.



I want to make it clear this department will continue to provide services to all residents and visitors and their legal status will continue to be irrelevant to our mission to provide public safety for everyone in the City of Hollister.

MENSAJE DE EL JEFE DE POLICIA:

Las preocupaciones sobre inmigración han sido parte de las noticias durante algún tiempo y, más recientemente, el problema se ha vuelto aún más frecuente debido a una nueva administración del gobierno de los Estados Unidos. Es comprensible que cuando hay falta de información y una retórica poco clara sobre la aplicación de las leyes de inmigración, los residentes se pregunten qué sucederá en las próximas semanas. La preocupación común es cómo cambiarán los agentes federales sus procedimientos o harán cumplir las leyes de inmigración que antes no se aplicaban. He asistido a varias reuniones con funcionarios de las fuerzas del orden y de las escuelas y puedo dar fe de que las preocupaciones están generalizadas en nuestra comunidad.



Quería compartir este mensaje con nuestra comunidad para recordarles a todos y asegurar de que no ha habido ningún cambio en los procedimientos del Departamento de Policía de Hollister. El Departamento de Policía de Hollister no hace cumplir la ley federal y no preguntamos el estatus legal de los residentes con los que nos comunicamos. Nuestra prioridad es la seguridad pública de nuestra comunidad y de cada persona que vive o visita aquí. Queremos que cualquier víctima o testigo de un delito se sienta cómodo al comunicarse con nosotros sin temor a ser arrestado por su estatus legal. Este siempre ha sido el caso con nuestro departamento, incluso antes de que se aprobara la ley SB54 (2017) en California, que restringe la cooperación con los agentes federales de inmigración. Además, este departamento no ha recibido solicitudes de agentes federales para ayudar en ninguna operación y la ley SB54 no permite que este departamento coopere, salvo con muy pocas excepciones que involucran a fugitivos peligrosos o violentos.



Quiero dejar en claro que este departamento seguirá brindando servicios a todos los residentes y visitantes, y su estatus legal seguirá siendo irrelevante para nuestra misión de brindar seguridad pública para todos en la ciudad de Hollister.
