“How well do you know your family’s finances?

It’s a question women are now asking each other—and themselves—as a memoir of money and divorce ripples through book clubs across the country.

The bestselling memoir has become a cautionary tale of financial naiveté. A Harvard-educated attorney and Vanderbilt heiress, Burden, 56, writes candidly about how she ceded control of her finances to her ex during their 20-year marriage, trusting him to act in her best interests. When he abruptly announces his desire to divorce, she is forced to pick up the pieces of her personal and financial life.

In book groups and online, women are sharing their own stories of romantic betrayal, and the financial fallout that often follows, in response to the book. Some are using the term “financial infidelity,” which refers to everything from hidden bank accounts to undisclosed depths of debt.

“At this point, everyone I know knows someone whose husband has gambled away all their money,” said political influencer Emily Amick, 41, whose book club feverishly discussed “Strangers.”

Samantha Perkins, 36, a TikTok creator who posts about her own experience with financial infidelity, said she found “Strangers” relatable “for anyone who’s been through any kind of relational betrayal.”

“He was line-iteming her credit card expenses,” she said, recalling Burden’s descriptions in the book. “And then she finds out he’s establishing a designer watch collection and obviously has this kind of secret life. I think a lot of women end up in this position.”

“Marriage is an economy of scale. And divorce means confronting harsh realities about the cost of being solo.

Ileana Garcia and her husband lived in a five-bedroom brick colonial home with a dining-room table that could seat a dozen people.

Just before her divorce was finalized in 2023, she downsized from her home of more than two decades in suburban New York to a nearby apartment. She still likes having people over, but at her 55th birthday party recently, everyone had to crowd around her kitchen island.

“There wasn’t enough room for everyone to sit,” said Garcia, who works in software sales. “That part sucked.”

The toughest part: Her rent is $5,000 a month. That is even more than the mortgage payments she and her husband paid with a combined income that was twice what she earns now.

Garcia knows she is fortunate financially. She earns about $250,000 a year—around what she was making when she was married. But without her ex-husband’s salary, it feels like she took a huge pay cut.

For others, the lifestyle adjustment after divorce is more extreme.”

Today was one of those full-circle days that reminds me how far I’ve come and how grateful I am for the people who believed in me along the way.

This morning, I won a hearing on the Petitioner’s Rule to Show Cause—the petition was denied in its entirety. Moments like that make all the hard work worth it.

Even more special, I had a spontaneous lunch with my former boss, a well-established criminal defense attorney I worked for as a paralegal over 20 years ago. Back then, he encouraged me to go to law school and always believed that one day I would run my own practice. I had the privilege of shadowing him in Lake County courtrooms, where so much of my journey began.

Today felt like a reminder of those early days—and how much mentorship and encouragement can truly shape a life.

Forever grateful. 🙏
