💕Getting married in 2023? 💕With Valentine's Day approaching, nothing says romance like a prenup.
No, seriously--hear me out!
Every day I speak with divorcing clients. On rare occasions, the divorce is amicable. The parties shake hands, walk away with a fair division of assets and debts, and wish one another the best. More frequently, there is tremendous animosity that causes one or both parties to seek an unfair result. Usually this effort greatly prolongs an already painful process and harms both parties financially (the proverbial "cutting off one's nose to spite one's face").
I have always felt that the absolute best time to come to a divorce or separation agreement is when couples are still at a point in their relationship that is characterized by kindness and generosity. This is the time when couples are most likely to come to an agreement that is truly fair. Thus, just as with living wills, a prenuptial agreement is not a morbid predictor of the future (or "jinx", if you will), but an advance directive that provides peace of mind to your loved one in the event of catastrophe and a demonstration of the depth of the parties' commitment to one another's future wellbeing.
With this in mind, this Valentine's Day, consider making an appointment to mediate a prenuptial agreement with an experienced divorce attorney who can help you consider and avoid future conflict. After all, what deeper way is there to show your love and commitment than to make a binding promise that you will support and respect one another's right to future happiness, no matter what?
