In a press release 7/17/2026, Governor Tina Kotek announced today that she will appoint Zohra Bakhtary Tourville to the Washington County Circuit Court. Judge Bakhtary Tourville will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Theodore Sims. Her appointment is effective immediately.

Zohra Bakhtary Tourville is currently serving as a Beaverton Municipal Court Judge. There she leads the nationally recognized B-SOBR treatment court, a DUII program designed for high-risk, high-need individuals with multiple DUII convictions. Judge Bakhtary Tourville is a native of Kabul, Afghanistan and came to the United States as a refugee.

We are thrilled to announce Vianey Conway, a longtime staff member of our office has completed the process to become a Licensed Paralegal through the Oregon State Bar! Vianey is a native Spanish speaker and member of our family law team.

In 2023, Oregon created a new type of legal licensure to help meet the civil legal needs of Oregonians. Similar to Nurse Practitioners in the medical profession, Licensed Paralegals (LPs) will be authorized to perform some limited-scope legal tasks previously available only from lawyers. The license is for designated legal work in housing and family law, the two areas of greatest unmet need by Oregonians.

Licensed paralegals must meet specific requirements for education and experience, and will be subject to many of the same rules and regulatory requirements that currently apply to lawyers. The intent is to provide access to legal help for those who currently cannot afford a lawyer or who otherwise might go to court with no legal assistance.

We look forward to welcoming her as a new providers on our team, into the Bar and the legal profession.

Our lead associate on the criminal defense team, Sunny Sidman participated in the Hillsboro Cadet Training Event held last month. The District Attorney’s office invited Sunny to give cadets a presentation on the defense attorney perspective. She spoke about the types of things defense attorneys may be looking for in police reports and what they may focus on in cross examination.
