THE GREAT DEBATE: WILLS vs TRUSTS!

"Do I need a will or a trust?" Great question. And the answer is: it depends on YOUR situation.

Here's the quick breakdown:

WILLS: ✔️ Designate guardians for minor children ✔️ Distribute assets after you die ✔️ Must go through probate ✔️ Generally simpler and less expensive
TRUSTS: ✔️ Avoid probate entirely ✔️ Can manage assets while you're alive AND after you die ✔️ Offer more privacy and control ✔️ Great for complex estates or specific goals

Some people need a will. Some need a trust. Many need BOTH.

The key is figuring out what makes sense for YOUR family, YOUR assets, and YOUR goals. And that's exactly what we do at Epling Law.

We don't push you toward the most expensive option. We guide you toward the RIGHT option. We ask the right questions, listen to your situation, and create a customized plan that works for you.

Peace of Mind May — Thank You & What's Next 🌟

Well, we made it to the end of Peace of Mind May! 🎉

Over the past month, we've talked about wills, trusts, powers of attorney, common myths, young families, and what happens when there's no plan. And if even one person reading this took a step toward protecting their family — this whole month was worth it. 💛

Here's our little end-of-month ask:

👉 If you've been following along and you're still on the fence — let this be your sign. The best time to get your estate plan in place is always NOW. Not later. Not "when things settle down." Now.

👉 If you already have a plan — that's amazing! But when did you last review it? Life changes (new baby, new home, new marriage, new decade) can mean your plan needs an update too.

👉 And if you found any of this helpful — please share it! You probably know someone who needs to hear this. Tag a friend, share a post, or just send them our way. We offer free consultations, and we'll take great care of them. 🤝

At Epling Law, we exist to make this easier for you. No pressure. No legalese. Just a team of real people in Hilliard, Ohio who genuinely care about helping our community be prepared.

Thank you for spending May with us. We'll see you next month with more helpful content. 🌸

5 Estate Planning Myths — Busted! 🚫

Okay, we hear these ALL the time. Let's set the record straight. 👇

❌ MYTH: "I'm too young for this."
✅ FACT: If you're 18+, you need basic documents in place. Life is unpredictable at any age.

❌ MYTH: "I don't have enough assets to bother."
✅ FACT: Estate planning is about more than money. It's about who makes decisions for you, who gets your things, and who raises your kids.

❌ MYTH: "My family knows what I want — that's enough."
✅ FACT: Without legal documents, family members can't act on your wishes — no matter how well they know you. And unfortunately, this can lead to family conflict.

❌ MYTH: "It's way too expensive."
✅ FACT: Estate planning is far more affordable than most people expect. And NOT having a plan? That can cost your family significantly more — in court fees, time, and stress.

❌ MYTH: "I can just do it online with a template."
✅ FACT: Online templates are generic. A real attorney makes sure your documents are valid in Ohio, tailored to your life, and actually do what you intend.

Which myth surprised you most? We'd love to know!

For the Young Families 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 This One's for You

If you have kids under 18, please keep reading. This is important. 💛

We work with a lot of young parents here in Central Ohio, and the conversation almost always goes the same way: "We've been meaning to do this, but life just gets busy."

We totally get it. But here's what we want every parent to know:

If something happens to you and you don't have a will, an Ohio court will decide who raises your children. It may not be who you'd choose. It can take time, cost money, and cause real pain for people you love during an already devastating moment.

A basic estate plan for a young family typically includes:

📄 A will (with a guardian named for your kids)
📄 A durable financial power of attorney
📄 A healthcare power of attorney
📄 Sometimes a trust — to protect assets for your kids until they're ready

This doesn't have to be complicated. Many of our clients are surprised by how straightforward the process is when you have the right guide.

And yes — your first conversation with us is always free. We meet in person at our Hilliard office or virtually, whatever works best for your busy schedule.

💬 Parents: What's the #1 thing holding you back from putting your estate plan in place?

📞 Don't wait. eplinglaw.com — schedule your free consult today. Your family deserves the peace of mind. 🧡

The Document That Could Save Your Family From a Crisis 🔑

We need to talk about Powers of Attorney. Because this one document might be the most important thing you never knew you needed.

A Power of Attorney (POA) is a legal document that lets you name someone you trust to make decisions on your behalf — if you ever can't make them yourself.

There are two main types we help clients with:

⚖️ Financial POA — Lets your chosen person handle banking, bills, real estate, and financial decisions if you're incapacitated. Without this, your family may have to go to court just to pay your mortgage.

🏥 Healthcare POA — Lets your chosen person make medical decisions for you if you're unable to. This is different from a living will (which states your end-of-life wishes) — this one gives someone the authority to act on your behalf in real time.

Here's a scenario we see too often: a young adult heads off to college or moves out, and something unexpected happens. Suddenly, their parents have zero legal authority to access medical info or help with finances — even if they want to. 😔

A POA changes that. And it's not just for older adults. We genuinely recommend these for anyone 18+.

💬 Did you know your parents (or you!) lose automatic legal access to your info when you turn 18? Did that surprise you?

📞 Get yours in place — eplinglaw.com for your free consult. It's one of the simplest, most powerful things you can do. ✅

Trusts Aren't Just for Rich People 💡

Can we clear something up? Trusts have a bit of a reputation — people assume they're only for millionaires or complicated family dynasties. That is simply not true. 😄

A trust is really just a legal arrangement where you transfer your assets into a "container" that's managed according to your rules — either during your lifetime, after your death, or both.

Here's why regular people love trusts:

🔹 Avoid probate — assets in a trust pass directly to your loved ones without going through Ohio's court process (which can be slow and public)
🔹 More control — you can set conditions, like "my kids receive this at age 25" instead of a lump sum at 18
🔹 Privacy — unlike a will, a trust isn't a public record
🔹 Helpful for blended families — you can protect assets for kids from a previous relationship

The most common type for families is a Revocable Living Trust. You stay in control while you're alive and well, and it kicks in seamlessly when you need it most.

Is a trust right for you? Maybe, maybe not — it depends on your situation. That's exactly what we help you figure out.

💬 Had you ever considered a trust before? What questions do you have about how they work?

📞 Let's talk it through — free consultation at eplinglaw.com. We're your neighbors in Hilliard! 🤝

What Even IS a Will? (And Do You Need One?) 📝

Let's start with the basics, friend. A will — also called a Last Will and Testament — is a legal document that spells out exactly what you want to happen to your belongings when you're gone. It can also name who you want to raise your kids if something happens to you. 💙

Without one? The state of Ohio decides. And Ohio doesn't know your family like you do.

Here are a few things a will can do for you:
✔️ Name who gets your home, savings, car, and personal belongings
✔️ Name a guardian for your minor children
✔️ Name an executor — the person who carries out your wishes
✔️ Give specific gifts (yes, even that vintage guitar collection)

And no — you don't have to be old or wealthy to need one. If you're a parent, own anything of value, or have strong feelings about who should — or shouldn't — receive your assets, a will matters.

The good news? Getting a will doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. At Epling Law, we walk you through the whole process and make it as simple as possible.

💬 Quick poll in the comments: Do you currently have a will? Yes / No / "I keep meaning to..." 😄
