ABRAMS LANDAU is proud to sponsor Rachel Carson Middle School as part of the Fairfax Law Foundation’s Adopt-A-School program. This sponsorship enables an entire class of eighth graders to participate in this longstanding civic education experience, a key component of Virginia’s Standards of Learning and an essential element in the eighth-grade Civics curriculum.

Attorney Doug Landau, who has long been passionate about civic education, has played an active role in this initiative for years. Not only has he personally led middle school students on these courthouse tours, explaining courtroom procedure and answering students’ many questions, he also volunteered for seven years as an instructor in the Fairfax County Public Schools “We the People” program. His teaching ended when the program was paused during COVID, but his involvement with local education has continued.

This past Wednesday, the Abrams Landau team headed to Seneca Ridge Middle School for another amazing Lids on Kids event! We fitted students with brand-new helmets and handed out safety lights, bike gear, and refurbished bikes, thanks to our partners at Maverick Bicycles. As always, we shared bike safety tips and the importance of preventing head injuries. Huge thank you also to the school staff and volunteers who helped make this event such a success!

New Record for the Lids on Kids Brain Injury Prevention & Bike Safety Program: 100 Helmets, Bikes, Lights, Bags & Safety Books in 100 Minutes!!!

At Dogwood Elementary School on Glade Drive in Reston, Virginia students and their families assembled for the Dogwood Elementary Bike Swap & Rodeo on Saturday, April 13, 2024. There were lots of smiles and it was a sunny day for everyone who participated. Students brought parents, siblings, and other relatives, such that the entire playground and athletic fields were covered with laughing, active children.

The INOVA Hospital System provided helpers for helmet distribution, set up a bike safety tent, and arts and crafts. Dogwood Art teachers assisted children with the bike-themed projects.

FCPS “Safe Routes to School” provided some bicycles, brought bicycle-themed craft supplies, and also helped children get their properly fit bikes. As an Abrams Landau Ltd. sponsored event, Melissa and Doug Landau made sure to include lots of free goodies for the children. The Landau’s fit each child with a brand new bicycle helmet, distributed safety coloring books, and instructed families on the importance of proper head protection.

Recycling Socks at Potomac River Running!

Potomac River Running stores have locations all across Northern Virginia. As Doug and Melissa Landau are avid runners, they often find themselves at PRR supporting this local NoVa business. PRR is a family-owned establishment that has been running for 20 years. The company “support[s] countless races and walking/running-related charities throughout the region.” Every Tuesday PRR hosts Social Runs in their Arlington location, welcoming all individuals with different speeds and abilities. Melissa and Doug Landau race in a half dozen PRR-sponsored races each year.

Potomac River Running has a sneaker recycling program that the Landaus often donate to PRR partners with “Got Sneakers” who take your old shoes and give them new life. Read our post on the Abrams Landau Athletes Blog to learn more! https://landauinjurylaw.com/theathleteslawyer/2023/07/06/stinky-shoes-theres-a-solution/

In addition to Got Sneakers, PRR also has a trash recycling program partnered with TerraCycle. “You can bring any of your finished nutritional product wrappers to our store. They turn all that trash into good by creating new products like playground pieces, furniture, and more!”

It’s no secret that PRR advocates for donation programs and environmental solutions. Most recently, the Landaus visited the One Loudoun Potomac River Running store with their grandkids. The corner of the store caught Doug’s eye as he saw a box for sock donations! PRR is working with Smartwool’s “Second Cut Project” for customers to donate their clean unwanted socks. Smartwool is taking these socks to keep them out of landfills and turn them into a new product.

Doug applauds Potamic River Running for taking his worn-out, smelly running shoes (and now fragrant socks!) and encourages others to support and donate!

Always trying to be efficient, Doug Landau enjoys supporting the initiatives that benefit from Bishop's events.

Travis Bishop has built up a company that puts on over 200 races a year in the Northern Virginia / Washington DC Metropolitan Area. His races cater to all levels of runners, joggers, and walkers. Venues range from wineries to the C&O canal. Many of the Bishop's events support charitable endeavors affiliated with veterans groups, the military, etc.

When there is racing at Washington DC‘s Haines Point, Doug Landau is especially excited to support these organizations because it ALSO enables him to drop off golf balls for the "First Tee" program, which teaches youth in the city how to play golf at the public course. This past weekend, Doug delivered another 30 dozen golf balls, which now brings his donation to over 1000 balls for these children to practice with, and knock into the Potomac River!

Landau accumulated most of these golf balls primarily during the COVID-19 pandemic while training on his bicycle and running by Loudoun and Fairfax County links. "I would see balls in the road and trails around golf courses" Landau noted, "I would return from training with a hip bag full of balls laying around trails public courses. It got to the point where I could spot a golf ball from 100 yards away! I sometimes would have so many on my long runs that I could not carry them all. I think that the high winds, lack of buffers/tall fences, and perhaps the skill level of local golfers, all contributed to the thousands of balls I have collected. Even on Reston Bike Club rides, I would sometimes stop and pick up a few balls on the street, if it was safe to do so. After giving all the new balls and sleeves I accumulated from my speeches to lawyers to the Oakton High School Golf Team, and over 1100 balls to First Tee, I still have a full trash can full of Titleist, Calloway, Dunlop, Nike, and other top brand golf balls."

The 6th Annual Warrior Ride.

Melissa and Doug were invited by Diane Norman, who works for NextPoint Group, a major sponsor of the event. They rode almost 30 miles with friends. According to the coordinator, nearly $99,000 was fundraised during this epic day for the Warrior Retreat at Bull Run!

This is all for a wonderful cause. Melissa and Doug have done the event several times before and enjoyed a wonderful barbecue afterward!

Doug Landau saw a number of riders who participated in Kinetic Multisport events. Others recognized this lawyer from his volunteer duties at the "Tri It Now" events in Manassas, VA at George Mason University in the Price Williams Campus Freedom Center.

Lisa Campbell visits the Landau Law Shop to retrieve some of our safety coloring books in English & Spanish for a distribution event at the Ashburn Library. The coloring book provides a fun learning experience to teach kids hand signals, how to properly ride bikes, with easy to understand explanations of traffic laws.

What can you do when you cannot do the things you used to do to help others? During the COVID pandemic, Doug Landau routinely gave blood at the Dulles INOVA donation center. Landau is a strong advocate of civic duty, and felt that donating was important to help others. His same passion was shown when he was a volunteer teacher in Civics at Rachel Carson Middle School prior to the pandemic. While he likes all the caps, trinkets, and other swag that’s provided at the blood donation centers, the sense of accomplishment is what makes it meaningful to the "triathlon trial lawyer.” Currently, he is taking a respite from blood donation during the peak of his competitive season between the World Championships and the USAT National Championships at the beginning of August. Lawyer Landau’s donations are set to resume at the beginning of the Fall, just as with the helmet & bicycle safety program, and children's clothing donations. Landau hopes that his endeavors will encourage others to save lives and prevent unnecessary suffering.

Blood donations are a necessity for patients undergoing surgeries and treatment. Blood saves lives, it’s as simple as that. According to the American Red Cross, every two seconds an individual in the United States is in need of a blood transfusion. As seen from the chart below, less than 5% of eligible donors actually donate! Landau aims to inspire others to consider giving, especially since no one has gotten COVID from blood donations! Plus, you can get Twinkies, Ho-hos, Ding Dongs and other treats you may not have had in a long time AND feel good about it!

The 2022 Virginia Trial Lawyers Association ("VTLA") annual convention was held at Lansdowne, Loudoun County, Virginia. Doug Landau has attended this important legal conference nearly every single year since becoming a member of the Virginia Bar in order to learn the latest changes in laws, strategies, and work with other top trial lawyers.

Landau has also previously been an instructor, sponsor and panelist on the continuing legal education (CLE) program at the VTLA annual meetings. At these programs, lawyers can also get “Continuing Legal Education” (“CLE”) credits. CLE is a required obligation that attorneys must take to ensure they are up to date on changes and amendments in the laws. Virginia requires its attorneys to finish 12 CLE credit hours every year, including at least 2 hours in legal Ethics.

Year in and year out, Landau has more CLE hours than is required. In fact he is a "Fellow" in the National College of Advocacy because he has so many CLE credits! He also earned extra credits for teaching on national and state trial lawyer programs. Prior to the pandemic, Landau was also a volunteer instructor, teaching Constitutional Law & Civics at the Rachel Carson Middle School. He is passionate about teaching the law, helping others to understand how our system works, and can be improved.

Distributing bicycle helmets, safety booklets and bicycles in order to prevent traumatic brain injury during COVID has been a challenge. However, the law firm of ABRAMS LANDAU, Ltd. in Herndon, and Maverick Bicycles in Leesburg, managed to visit EVERY single Title I school in Loudoun County. A dinner was held honoring them hosted by the Loudoun School-Business Partnership. Since Doug Landau was out of state competing in the US Triathlon World Championship Qualifying events in Texas that week, he was unable to attend. However, Grant Schafer delivered a plaque to the Landau Law Shop to show the Schools' and Loudoun County's gratitude.

Here at ABRAMS LANDAU, our "Lids for Kids" program partners with local police, boy scout and girl scout troops, and public schools. We educate children as to bicycle safety, and give out brand new bike helmets, bags, t-shirts, bike safety coloring books (in English AND Spanish). The bicycles distributed free of charge, are refurbished by Maverick, and often have disc brakes, gears, and are sized to each child. In addition, groceries, safety lights, food certificates, and other items of need. The staff at ABRAMS LANDAU attended distribution events and were able to teach the elementary students how to shift gears, signal, use handbrakes, and other bike safety elements.

While Doug Landau liked speaking to, and interacting with, the large groups of fifth and sixth graders that would attend at Herndon area and Loudoun County Public Schools prior to COVID, he believes the small events in 2021 and 2022 were much better than the "drive through" one-and-done's that became the new normal during the height of the pandemic. Groups of 12-24 students came with parents and adult caregivers for an interactive bike safety discussion to the Loudoun County Public School events at Fredrick Douglass Elementary, Cool Springs Elementary, and Madison's Trust Elementary

Currently, ABRAMS LANDAU has a number of helmets in the conference room for the next school year, in order to protect children from unnecessary skull fracture and brain injury. The helmets given out are from the Bell Company, and are guaranteed until each student turns 18. If a student is in an accident and cracks the helmet, or there is some issue with the helmet, it is replaced by Lawyer Landau from the Law Shop's stockpile, no questions asked.

Named by my peers to LAWYERS WEEKLY "Go To Lawyers" for injured workers, I was one of only 2 lawyers who did not send in a formal photo in a suit or fancy outfit. I figured it's hard to beat a TeamUSA kit & a photo from Australia competing at the World Championships for your country!
