Today we honor our relatives who are missing or have been murdered.

The National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Relatives highlights a systemic and ongoing failure to protect human rights of Indigenous women, girls, and relatives. Indigenous relatives, women, girls, and Two-Spirt individuals face disproportionate rates of violence, including gender-based violence, stalking, and homicide.

As an Indigenous-led organization, we affirm that our communities have the right to safety, justice, and self-determination. Governments have a legal obligation to protect these rights, uphold accountability, and ensure equitable access to justice and safety.

Indian Law Resource Center attends and panels at the American Society of International Law's Annual Conference 2026. Leo Crippa, Senior Attorney, has been invited to speak on the "The Great AI Race: Whither Human Rights in the AI Supply Chain” panel at the ASIL Annual Meeting tonight at 5:00 EST. This panel will discuss the impacts on Indigenous peoples’ rights in minerals extraction, environmental harms, labor exploitation in hardware manufacturing, and privacy rights, and explore how accountability, transparency, and legal certainty can be operationalized along AI’s lifecycle, linking corporate practice to the rule of law in both municipal and international settings.

We are very proud and honored to have Leo represent the Indian Law Resource Center at this event.

Kawahiva Indigenous Territory of Rio Pardo - Urgent Call to Demarcate

The Indigenous and indigenist organizations COIAB (Coordination of Indigenous Organizations of the Brazilian Amazon), FEPOIMT (Federation of Indigenous Peoples and Organizations of Mato Grosso), Survival International, OPAN (Operation Native Amazon), and Opi (Observatory of Isolated Indigenous Peoples), are campaigning for the National Indian Foundation (FUNAI) to demarcate the Kawahiva Indigenous Territory of Rio Pardo.

The demarcation of the the Kawahiva territory has been stalled for 26 years, leaving the Kawahiva people without the full legal protections their lands have the right to. This prolonged delay exposes their territory to invasions by loggers, cattle ranchers, and land grabbers, threatening their subsistence ways of life and placing their safety and survival at serious risk.

The Indian Law Resource Center supports the ongoing campaign by these organizations in order to full protect the Kawahiva territory. Read the full statement at indianlaw.org/news and follow these organizations for more information.

The Center attended the 7th Elective Assembly of COAPIMA and the 6th Meeting of AMIMA. The events were held in the Zutiwa Village, Araribóia Indigenous Land, in the state of Maranhão, Brazil, serving as two key spaces for Indigenous democracy and sociopolitical analysis.

We accompanied the discussions among Maranhão’s Indigenous leaders regarding their diverse realities—including their struggle against the violence and violations they face within their lands. Representatives of the Araribóia Indigenous Land, including members of COCALITIA and the Forest Guardians, joined the high level discussions, focusing particularly on the challenges of defending their collective rights at the international level.

Indigenous women in the Americas experience gender-based violence and land-based violence by extractive industries at disparate rates. This panel of Indigenous women leaders will critically examine the roles of governments and private industries in increasing rates of violence and dispossession in Indigenous nations. This discussion will consider legal and political protections for Indigenous women surrounding violent industries, specifically Line 5 in the US, the role of militarism in Hawaii, Ambler Road in Alaska, palm oil in Guatemala, and logging in Peru.
