A Message from MassDOT and MassWildlife re: Peregrine Falcon Chicks

Yesterday at the Gillis Bridge in Newburyport, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation and MassWildlife banded four recently hatched peregrine falcon chicks. MassDOT and MassWildlife have installed artificial nesting boxes across the state to provide a safe location for falcons to nest and raise their young. Each year, MassWildlife bands chicks in late spring and early summer, which provides biologists with useful information about the birds’ movements, lifespan, and injury recovery.

MassDOT and MassWildlife installed an artificial nesting box at the Gillis Bridge in 2018. Since then, 29 chicks have hatched and fledged from this location. A camera was installed in 2020, which takes photos of the nest every 15 minutes during the daytime. The camera can be viewed here: https://public.senserasystems.com/public/project/gillisbridgeperegrinecamera MassDOT and MassWildlife maintain peregrine falcon nesting boxes at 16 bridges across the state. Through this partnership, MassWildlife and MassDOT support the conservation of peregrine falcons on bridges, which in turn controls pigeon populations and prevents waste buildup from rusting bridge components.

Peregrine falcons are the fastest birds on Earth, with dive speeds over 240 mph. 2026 marks the 40th year of peregrine falcon restoration efforts in Massachusetts, which is now home to more than 40 territorial pairs of peregrine falcons. By 1955, due to the widespread use of harmful pesticides like DDT, there were no nesting peregrine pairs left in Massachusetts. In 1984 and 1985, MassWildlife and partners released young falcons in downtown Boston, successfully leading to the first modern Massachusetts nest in 1987 on the Customs House Tower in Boston. Peregrine falcons are currently listed as Special Concern under the Massachusetts Endangered Species Act.
