I attempted earlier to link to a press release from DHEC regarding the more liberal visitation polices in force. This is great news for all who have longed to spend more time with their older relatives and especially so for those in care facilities who have been so sequestered for so long.

This article is particularly useful because it focuses on an element of estate planning over which attorneys have very little control - communication within the family. Not only does the writing present the importance of communication, but also touches upon the issue of timing. Though we have held many family meetings with clients for the purpose of discussing the terms of estate plans and the duties which may fall to various family members, only the client can initiate the communication process.

One particularly noteworthy element of the article is that the writer is not an attorney, but a financial advisor. Though I am happy to to suggest articles written by estate lawyers, a different perspective is always welcome.

Communicate early and often with your family about what to expect after you’re gone.

This is one of the best articles written for broad consumption I have read in too long. Congress has placed us in a state of flux which impacts estate planning in very significant ways. The article does a very nice job of presenting some of the elements necessary to consider in planning for one's estate. Also, by extension, the writer calls our attention to the need for periodic reviews of our estate plans.
