"The spirit of the census is that no one should go uncounted and no one should be invisible," Harris said in a written statement. "We must expand data collections efforts to ensure the LGBTQ community is not only seen, but fully accounted for in terms of government resources provided."

A group of Democrats says the data could help more LGBTQ people get access to social services and strengthen civil rights protections. Some privacy experts worry the data could be used against people.

"Advocacy groups have been campaigning for years to include questions about s*xual orientation and gender identity, and were briefly elated when the 2020 Census draft was released. But hopes were dashed when the proposed addition suddenly disappeared, and a statement was issued by the Census bureau that called the LGBTQ inclusion a mistake."

Advocates are calling for a congressional oversight hearing after LGBTQ questions were quickly removed from a draft of the 2020 Census.

“The legislation puts the religious beliefs of those who serve kids above the kids themselves, and that’s why I have a particular problem with this.” said Georgia State Senator Elena Parent (D-Atlanta), one of only two committee members who voted against the bill. The Georgia State Senate Rules Committee will meet later Tuesday to decide which bills will come up for a full vote in the Senate, which is in session again on Wednesday.

The Georgia Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday morning passed a bill that would allow adoption agencies to refuse to place children with same-s*x couples based on their religious beliefs. The bill would also prohibit the Georgia Department of Human Services from taking “adverse action” agains...

“I don’t want to overstate the case: Not everything has changed in America, or in Hollywood. Drag performance can be fun if you’re on the cusp of Hollywood stardom, but nine transgender people have been murdered in 2017 so far. Long-standing debates about whether it’s acceptable for straight actors to play gay characters (or whether such a policy would ghettoize gay actors in gay roles) are yet to be settled. But if we’ve still got a long way to go, there’s nothing wrong with a little shot of joy to remind us how far we’ve come. I wish I could go back in time and share this one with my high school classmates.”

Sometimes, a piece of pop culture can remind us just how far we've come.
