August is National Wellness Month and Farm Worker Appreciation Day also falls in August. In this episode of The Paid Leave Podcast, we talk to a doctor in Connecticut and hear her story of resilience, farming as therapy, and kindness.

Dr. Ivette Ruiz, a traumatic brain injury survivor and founder of Healing by Growing Farms in East Haven, shared her journey of overcoming adversity through gardening. In 2020, she suffered a brain injury while deploying for Hurricane Isaias, leading to significant challenges including food insecurity and loss of insurance. Despite these obstacles, she found solace in gardening, which became therapeutic and led to the creation of a farm that provides free services to brain injury trauma survivors.
