This year the Mercer County Farm Bureau Federation teamed up with Mercer County Extension Office to create a Historic Farms Recognition Program. We recently celebrated Three Lane Farm (Burks-Smith-Robinson-Holiday Farm) at our annual meeting as a sesquicentennial farm. This farm has been in the same family since well before 1876. Currently this farm still produces hay, cattle, soybeans, and corn.

At our annual meeting on August 15, 2026 we hosted a public forum. Due to some scheduling conflicts, not all candidates were able to attend. Mercer County Chief Deputy Sean Brown, Chris Walker, Zach Dembo, Dr. Ralph Alvarado, Charles Booker and Representative Andy Barr were some of the ones not able to attend and so we asked all candidates that will appear on the November ballot in Mercer County the following questions incase they weren't able to attend in person. 1. Tell us about yourself in 200 words or less 2. In 300 words or less, describe how you would use your office to benefit Mercer County's farmers and rural community (see below their answers). The candidates that were able to attend were Judge Executive Sarah Steele and Mercer County Deputy Sheriff Tim Gambrel and they were allowed to speak on what they can do for our county and our farmers. Judge Whitney Johns was in attendance as a guest and was given the opportunity to speak also. The main rule for the public forum is that both candidates have to be in attendance . The only elected position that both candidates were able to attend was for State Representative 55th District. Kentucky Farm Bureau Federation Director of National Affairs and Government Relations, Ericka King, was the moderator between Representative Kim King and Katrina Sexton. We want our community to be able to make informed decisions when they go to vote in the General Election on November 3, 2026. At the meeting, we took a poll asking attendees if they regularly vote and are they familiar with the candidates in the general election. Overwhelming majority reported they voted regularly. About one-third was not familiar with the candidates. We hope everyone learned something from this event and remember YOUR VOTE COUNTS!!!

In 2023, Kentucky Farm Bureau Federation created a new program called the Legacy Farm, which is in recognition of a farm's long-standing commitment and significant contributions to the local community. We were blessed to recognize 3 legacy farm families this year at our annual meeting at Devine's Corn Maze & Pumpkin Patch.

The first one is The Riley Farm, owned by Edwin & Vicky Riley. They have been farming for over 50 years. Edwin grew up loving farming since he was raised on a farm. They raise cattle and grow corn, soybeans, to***co, hay and h**p. Edwin and Vicky have 1 child, Jessica and 2 grandchildren.

Next is Locus Hill Farm where Buddy Terhune, Teresa Ashton and Stephen Terhune, the children of Sonny and Carolyn Terhune grew up on the family farm in McAfee. Deeded to the Terhune family in 1909, it was a chicken hatchery until 1963, when it became a dairy. The dairy was closed December of 2000. Currently Stephen runs 30 Angus cow/calf pairs on the 70 acres.

Last is Five Reasons Farm owned by John Goodlett and his wife, Nancy. They have farmed for over 75 years following in their parents’ footsteps. He worked at IBM and she worked at the US Post office in addition to farming. John and Nancy have raised cattle and grew to***co, corn, hay and milked. They have 2 kids, Dee Dee and Stephen, 5 granddaughters and 8 great grandchildren.

We are very thankful for our Legacy Farms because we need the 2% that feeds and clothes the other 98% of the world.

We had a great night at our annual meeting at Devine's Corn Maze & Pumpkin Patch on August 15, 2026. It was a hot night but we were able to recognize many great people in our agriculture community. Jason Currens was recognized as our 2026 Mercer County Farm Bureau Young Farmer of the Year. Jason's love for agriculture began growing up on a dairy farm in Mercer County where he bred and raised registered Holsteins from an early age. He milked, showed, and worked on the farm with his parents, Jeff and Deborah Currens, until they retired from miking in 2017. By that time, Jason had purchased his grandparents farm and expanded his operation to include beef cattle, sheep and both grass and alfalfa hay, as well as a small lawn care business.

Today, Jason and his partner Tess, farm approximately 800 acres in Mercer County consisting of a 120 head cow/calf operation with both spring and fall calving herds. They background their own calves as well as calves they purchase with the goal of feeding and marketing approximately 300 head per year. Jason spends most of his summer in the hay field where he bales several thousand bales of hay each year to feed his own cows as well as to market to friends and neighbors. He grows corn and chops silage each fall for winter feed. He also raises alfalfa and orchardgrass with his parents on their farm which is marketed as small squares to area farmers. Jason strives to continue to grow and diversify his farming operation so he can stay on the farm full time.

Congratulations Jason Currens. We are so thankful for our young farmers.
